What are some good venues for visual displays, aside from the typical locations (i.e. public libraries, malls, Union Station), that would be widely accessible/visible to the general public?

liberty memorial auditorium is mega nice. also, the american heartland theater rents its space for presentations, using the stage. kind of a nice effect with the theatre seating.

City Stage at Union Station is also an option. Cleaver used to broadcast his NPR show from there.

Just one to add is the River Market.  The building on the east side by Steamboat Arabia has a nice gallery hallway. There is a fair amount of foot traffic through there.

Now, for the creative ideas (I'm going to have a little fun with this): 1) Ever been to one of those mega-churches? I haven't, but, I hear that some have what equates to a shopping mall atmosphere in side, and with 5-10,000 members it could be a venue for visuals. (This is my most kooky idea) 2) Overland Park Convention Center (a place to promote things to those who haven't set foot in downtown once in the last 9 years that they can remember) 3) Bartle Hall-lots of hallways, nooks and crannies there. 4) The two trade centers-one in Overland Part and the other up noorth of of I-29. 5) the casinos

Now, here's another question: Do you know of any places that don't charge money in order to put up a display there? (Union Station's fees equate to multiple arms and legs...)

You might consider the Discovery Center at 47th and Troost (http://mdc.mo.gov/areas/kcmetro/discovery/).  I think it might be free if you're a not-for-profit.  Are you looking for walk-by traffic or will people be coming specifically to look at the presentation?

At one point Kay Barnes had an initiative where folks would use the street level of some of the mothballed buildings downtown as display places for art.  There aren't that many mothballed buildings anymore but there may be some.  The deal is that the art supplier who wanted their stuff displayed would clean up the display place and keep it neat.

The Discovery Center is a lovely venue but is used quite often for similar events and we hope to be able to display the presentations at venues that would attract some non-typical crowds. Walk-by traffic takes preference for the displays I have in mind.

what about somewhere during First Friday?  i don't know the nature of your presentation, but you could project things onto a wall outside, or even have some sort of gathering in a gallery or studio space.  the little nook down by Leedy-Voulkos might be nice.

That's a bit harder, but if you can get it up in time for First Friday, you might have some luck.  Maybe some sympathetic store windows?  How about the Urban Living Center next to Cellar Rats?  Is there a store window in a currently empty store-front DT?  Or the Plaza -- if you could get walk-by traffic during Xmas shopping -- is there an empty storefront?  Or even better -- is there an empty store front at Oak Park  or 119th and Roe (preaching to the non-choir)?  How about public libraries, especially the central library in OP or the Plaza Branch?

Here's another idea a little further out -- how about setting up at a race finish line?  They usually have some sort of snack tent with a lot of people milling around, a lot of people who like to walk and bike, even if they never make it out of the burbs.  Folks who would be interested in a walkable city or a real transit system (ride out, run back).  Here's a calendar with a list of upcoming events (http://www.mararunning.org/maraschlaptop.htm).  Not sure what your timeframe looks like, but the new 2007 calendar should be posted soon.
