Re: Status and future of the River Market area??
Why hasn't someone developed this building at W. 3rd Street and Wyandotte?
It seems to me it would be perfect as a British-type pub restaurant.
Does anyone know for what it's being used -- if anything?

And, the former Oriental Club Building at 416 E. 5th Street as well.

I believe it is storage space. I had heard that the owners were once involved with the now-closed Architectural Salvage. In recent years they've faced some health issues, and dealing with this building and its contents is understandably not high on the priority list.FangKC wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 5:00 am Why hasn't someone developed this building at W. 3rd Street and Wyandotte?

The extreme homeless population in the River Market may be why it is such an undesirable place to walk around. I noticed too, that people don't walk around unless they have a dog with them and there seems to be as many dogs as people in the RM. More green space is certainly needed since the riverfront isn't easily accessible.

Always here for more green space! Have heard some cool ideas on this point in the RM between 2nd street and the RR tracksJohnKCMO wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 9:48 am The extreme homeless population in the River Market may be why it is such an undesirable place to walk around. I’ve had problems with homeless adjacent to the market, but usually only in the surface lots there. Buildings with street front activation I haven’t really had that problemJohnKCMO wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 9:48 am The extreme homeless population in the River Market may be why it is such an undesirable place to walk around. While I like greenery--it's a huge mood booster, and mature street trees hugely improve the enjoyability of walking on the street during summer, when I hear "green space" I worry folks are advocating setting aside large tracts as park space. I'm not sure if that's specifically what you mean here, but personally I definitely don't want more of that in the city. KC has plenty of parkland, but much of it is poorly maintained because resources are stretched so thin, and we can't really afford the additional burden. We really have to retrofit density back into the city so that we have a healthy enough tax base to maintain what we have at the level it deserves.JohnKCMO wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 9:48 am The extreme homeless population in the River Market may be why it is such an undesirable place to walk around. So what I want is, greenery without the green space. 20th and Main is a good example of what I'm talking about. https://www.google.com/maps/@39.0890803 ... 384!8i8192
The tradeoff there is, that sort of greenery comes from road diets to make room for landscaping which means losing curbside parking. But that's exactly what I want as a city dweller.

Tacking on to add, Google street view is behaving interestingly right now, depending on where you set the point of view on the street you can actually get a good view of what 20th and Main looked like before the road diet and greenery additions, and now.

Or you can just hit the dates link at the top left and go through all the different date views from the same spotHalcyonKC wrote: ↑Fri Feb 10, 2023 4:23 pm Tacking on to add, Google street view is behaving interestingly right now, depending on where you set the point of view on the street you can actually get a good view of what 20th and Main looked like before the road diet and greenery additions, and now.

I always thought it would be iconic to paint RIVER MARKET on Vicinity Energy's smoke stacks. Of course that would be up them. They might get a free paint job out of it though.

Ended up looking into it myself. The address is 14 West 3rd St. There is a project on compass, but no public plans. It appears to be an expansion of the existing offices. Parcel viewer has the same address as 'The Borman Group' mentioned in this business journal article as the owners; this property was mentioned towards the end. https://www-bizjournals-com.kclibrary.i ... -sale.html

Time to crack down on the River Market taggers. How does no one see someone spray a tag 12 foot tall?

The city can’t stop crime and you’re worried about tagging. Tell me you’re a yuppie without telling me you’re a yuppie. You’d probably ironically live in a building with some stupid name pertaining to art too. Go to any other major city and there’s garbage and vandalism everywhere even in the nicest parts, you’re a crybaby.
