You think they will add much more w/o county help?
Its the state that's held up, not the county. KS' state credit apparently is not good enough to sell the STAR bonds right now- you apparently get downgraded a bit when you quit paying people's tax refunds.
I don't know for sure what they will get done without the state bond money (it was at least a couple hundred mil as I recall), but in the pictures you can see where they appear to be pretty far along in building a lake for the paddle wheel boat they have sitting out there. My hunch is they will keep plugging away at the waterpark expansion and leave the hotels and retail complex untill the state comes through.
I'm curious how much of Schlitterbahn's marketing plan relies on their goodwill and brand strength among those who know about it. I'm not a huge waterpark or amusement park guy. I grew up in Omaha, where Oceans of Fun/Worlds of Fun were a big regional draw, and lived in Dallas for 6 years. Never been to either park (maybe I went to OOF when a kid, don't remember, WoF for sure).
My impression of the two, based only on branding and reputation, is like In 'N Out Burger compared to Winstead's; or Nordstrom compared to Macy's...or Target. Not to say that reflects reality, and clearly Schlitterbahn doesn't have that kind of brand cache on this board. Not sure how many TX transplants or Schlitt fanatics live in KC, but I have a very high opinion of Schlitterbahn based simply on word-of-mouth. I wouldn't be surprised if either a) they're banking on that kind of rep (i.e., folks driving several hours for opening day) or b) they just actually are that much better, in which case all this brouhaha will be far overshadowed by its awesomeness.

At Schlitt you can just ride the river to the next ride and not have to get out or stand in lines (seems like a brilliant idea to me).
Right...you obviously missed the areas within the river that are reserved for ride lines. Then again, floating in line may be better than standing in line anyways...at least it is when you want to piss on the linecutters in front, and downstream of you

Call me crazy, but I actually think it's cool that the first phase of a $750 million development opened in KC today.
Go Schlitt!
I think calling any part of Wyandotte County a "KC" Development is quite the stretch...to say the least...
Kansas should just exclude itself fromt the greater Kansas City area all together. That would solve at least 80% of this regions problems...

I am excited but doesn't mean a few funnies can't be had at some of those pictures and the decision to charge close to the same admission rates as an established water park.
The unfinished Schlitterbahn is far from a Schlitterbust. But in its present state, it?s far from Schlitterific.....
Still, since they're willing to take people's money, they?re asking for criticism. Mine is that the attractions were a little on the thin side.
Supposedly we could visit eight of the 13 attractions on the map. But the way I counted it, it was more like three attractions open for adults and us big kids - four if you counted the poolside bar.
But since it was a little early in the day for a Stoli, I headed for the two water slides that were operating.
The Bahnzai Pipeline is your run-of-the-mill open-air slide.
And the Black Knight is an enclosed tube slide that is dark and spooky inside.
Black Knight, you rock. Likewise, I became a fan of the Torrent River, which snakes along for 1,800 feet and can fit upwards of 2,000 people.
Only a few dozen of us were tubing the Torrent on Thursday morning. Like me, some kids in a passing inner tube pronounced it "pretty cool" due to the wave action.
I opted not to test the kiddie slides for fear that I might slip and fall. Small children are so easily squished these days.
As for the other attractions, Ozimek said it won?t be until this weekend that some of them are running.
One thing the Schlitterbahn doesn?t have is a wave pool that comes close to the one at Oceans of Fun. The biggest one, off the Torrent River at Torrent Beach, is plenty tame.

Way to demonstrate just how rational and impartial your comments about this development are.
You should go read this thread from page 1. I was one of the biggest supporters of this project, before they decided to scrap plans and make it a 3 stage opening..vs a 2 stage...and cut corners in order to open "on time" in 2009. I thought they were going to do things right, and completely blow everything off the map from day 1, but clearly I was wrong.

And those possibly legitimate critiques are really supported how when you go off on some irrational state line rant?

Schlitterbahn Master Plan. If they pull this off it will be fairly amazing. The indoor park looks to be almost bigger than the outdoor park.

All but one of the 13 attractions at Schlitterbahn Vacation Village are up, and so are the waterpark?s prices....
The only attraction not open now is the Blitz Falls tube chute.
Since Friday, admission prices have gone up to $32.99 for guests 12 and older. Admission for those 3 to 11 and 55 and older is $24.99.
Don't know if it is worth $33 right now but it will be in the coming years when they finish all of the landscaping, hotel, shops ect... but if it comes out being ANYTHING like the other parks or renderings from the previous poster then it will be worth more like $40...
btw any new word on the hard rock or casino that they are trying to get off of the ground again?
I wouldn't mind paying that for the entrance to the park...AFTER phase I, II, & III are completed. Right now they've got to be out of their minds!! What a crock of crap! For $28.99 I can get into Oceans of Fun...which at the moment, is completely comparable/slightly better/100x more astehtically pleasing than the Schiltterbahn Lack-O-Vacation-Village. And that's without using any discounts...$29 is their full price!

One of the big differences between the pricing model of Schlitterbahn and Oceans of Fun is secondary sales.
OOF: "Guests are welcome to bring picnic lunches and enjoy them outside the park near the front gate."
S: "Picnics welcome! Guests are permitted to bring their own food and beverages inside the park!"
OOF: tubes and life jackets are available for rental
S: tubes and life jackets are free

Tube rental, Parking, and Locker Rental is extra at OOF though
