Re: The rest of the NFL
Tebow with the Jets is a juicy storyline - backup for Sanchez and a large market with high visibility and vocal fans (and vocal non-fans).

Re: The rest of the NFL
That organization is a mess though. They have a QB who supposedly doesn't get along with the star wideout and now they're undercutting him by bringing Tebow on.kcjak wrote:Tebow with the Jets is a juicy storyline - backup for Sanchez and a large market with high visibility and vocal fans (and vocal non-fans).
I still think Sanchez has upside - if the Jets are through with him, I wouldn't mind the Chiefs picking him up.

As someone who is a Packers owner, I'm not happy about this one. This is how the NFL replacement refs will be remembered:

I think the replacement refs are awesome. They just need Aaron Rodgers to hit them over the back with a folding chair and have Miss Elizabeth come out and the NFL's transformation to the WWF will be complete.

I'm all for history and everything, but the Redskins should absolutely change their name, and Chief Wahoo should be banished from Major League Baseball.AllThingsKC wrote:Members of Congress urge Washington Redskins to change name.

And the Chiefs???????????????????????????
Yes, I know all about H Roe Bartle but I do not see his likeness anywhere with the team.

Is that why they're called the Chiefs? I didn't know that. I can definitely see Bartle's likeness in Andy Reid.

Neither the word "Chiefs" or the Arrowhead are exclusively Native American. In fact they are a part of many, many cultures. Nor are neither terms derogatory toward Native Americans. At the behest of the Native American community The Kansas City Chiefs organization has scrubbed every reference to Native Americans from it's club.
"Redskins" is a derogatory term that refers specifically to Native Americans and is as offensive as calling a African American a "N-word". Chief Wahoo is a racist caricature of Native Americans that is as offensive as any of the African American or Asian American caricatures of the 1940's.
There is no longer any space for this type of insensitivity in our culture.

Re: The rest of the NFL
The Chiefs' name is equivalent to that of the Kings. It is a cultural position in a specific society. We don't have Kings in the US, but we name teams after them. I think it is even more relevant to name a team after a cultural position rooted in the Americas (Scouts, Chiefs, Pioneers, etc.).
Even the "Indians" name is not entirely offensive in and of itself if you compare it to a mascot like the "Irish" or "Celtics." Where the "Indians" name becomes a problem is that the history of the word is rooted in a misunderstanding of the world and of native peoples. I have no problem with a team name of the Seminoles (if the Seminoles themselves are ok with it), and I actually did not mind the symbol for the fighting Illini, but the Cleveland Indians' mascot is still one of the worst remaining symbols of overt racism around.

"Chiefs" by itself I would agree. "Arrowhead" by itself I would agree. A team color of "red" by itself I would agree. But you put the three together along with the team being in the good old USA and you get Native American. Plus the antics of the team's fans.shinatoo wrote:Neither the word "Chiefs" or the Arrowhead are exclusively Native American. In fact they are a part of many, many cultures. And let's not forget team mascot "Warpaint".

Re: The rest of the NFL
There are people offended by these names:
Washington Redskins
Kansas City Chiefs
Cleveland Indians
Atlanta Braves
Florida State Seminoles
All of those teams have been protested against because their names are offensive or potentially offensive. If the government forces the Redskins to change their name, where is the line drawn for acceptable team names?

If the government were to ever force the Chiefs to change their name, I would hope they'd pay homage to Blazing Saddles and go with Kansas City Faggots.
