Re: The Official Kansas City Weather Thread
I haven't heard that but with floodwaters downstream that doesn't make much sense. Went across I70 over the weekend and at the MO river crossing by Booneville the land on the north side of the highway was pretty high.
I may be right. I may be wrong. But there is a lot of gray area in-between.

Sometimes they do not have any choice. If they had a big snow melt, and I believe that was the case, they need to let some water through or risk the integrity of the dams.aknowledgeableperson wrote: I haven't heard that but with floodwaters downstream that doesn't make much sense. Change in color by me.To help relieve the threat of major flooding downstream and take pressure off levees, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers slashed the release of water at Gavins Point Dam in Nebraska late Sunday from 33,000 to 15,000 cubic feet per second.

Christ, I am doing good if I can remember what the weather was like two weeks ago - let alone seventeen years.

All I know is that I'm having trouble accomplishing any gardening because it keeps raining.

I was thinking that a couple weekends ago when a planned trip to Watkins Mill State Park was rained out. I remembered that the last time I was at Watkins Mill was the very day the Flood of '93 started. I was hiking when a sudden unexpected downpour started with my almost 2 miles from shelter. It rained every day thereafter for what, over a month?

Pretty cool that they captured the collapse from inside on video. The NY Giants were actually diverted into KC because the Minneapolis Airport had closed.KCMax wrote:

Jimmy says it's going to be as big or bigger than the '93 SUPERSTORM. We are looking at ice in stl/illinois, too. I get to finish some groundwater sampling in central illinois this coming week because i came down with the flu and filled a 20 oz QT cup with vomit last week.KCPowercat wrote: zomg, zomg, zomg

Don't confuse the water samples with the content of the QT cup lest you start an epic EPA investigation.warwickland wrote: I get to finish some groundwater sampling in central illinois this coming week because i came down with the flu and filled a 20 oz QT cup with vomit last week.
Looks like a worse than usual winter in KC. Last year was bad but I seem to remember only hearing about that 1 big snow just before Christmas.

Re: The Official Kansas City Weather Thread
What happened to the common snow storms KC used to get with an average of 2-4 inches? Seems like all 3 major snow storms this winter have been for 6-9+ inches.

Re: The Official Kansas City Weather Thread
yeah seems like they have been storing up the normal snows into a few big storms the past couple years.

Need to pen that Arctic air back up where it belongs.Yet while people in Atlanta learn to shovel snow, the weather 2,000 miles to the north has been freakishly warm the past two winters. Throughout northeastern Canada and Greenland, temperatures in December ran as much as 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. Bays and lakes have been slow to freeze; ice fishing, hunting and trade routes have been disrupted.
Iqaluit, the capital of the remote Canadian territory of Nunavut, had to cancel its New Year?s snowmobile parade. David Ell, the deputy mayor, said that people in the region had been looking with envy at snowbound American and European cities. ?People are saying, ?That?s where all our snow is going!? ? he said.
The immediate cause of the topsy-turvy weather is clear enough. A pattern of atmospheric circulation that tends to keep frigid air penned in the Arctic has weakened during the last two winters, allowing big tongues of cold air to descend far to the south, while masses of warmer air have moved north.
The deeper issue is whether this pattern is linked to the rapid changes that global warming is causing in the Arctic, particularly the drastic loss of sea ice. At least two prominent climate scientists have offered theories suggesting that it is. But others are doubtful, saying the recent events are unexceptional, or that more evidence over a longer period would be needed to establish a link.
