Kemper Arena–Dimming and Down
The Star reports a City Council Committee will make the first moves toward ending the Kemper’s management contract with Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG). The city will regain full control of the aging and discarded arena.
“We’ll stop all pretense of trying to market it as an alternative events space, and let AEG focus on filling the Sprint Center,” City Manager Troy Schulte said to the Star.
Kemper has hosted just over 50 events in the last three years, not counting the American Royal shows and exhibitions. That’s almost no business at all.

If this is such a win-win for both the city and AEG then we shouldn't be paying AEG the $100,000+ management fee for the second half of the year.

I don't claim to understand some things. Save buildings that may actually have a use in the future, not an old facility that will need huge amounts of maintenance in the future.

This is going to be quite different that other historic or significant buildings. You can't turn it into offices or apartments. It's going to be hard to find a new use. It's a behemoth like Union Station, but unlike Union Station, it's going to be hard to find some purpose for it.

And unlike Union Station, it's badly located off the beaten track (a fact that will always go unchanged and contributed greatly to the demise of the building in the first place). The American Royal is about its only hope.

Tear down the building but leave the exoskelton up. Hang a milar tent under it (think Denver airport) and use it as a three season ampatheater. You could still have rodeo events and concerts, plus things like the american royal BBQ.

A museum of outdated and demolished arenas and stadia. Sorta like putting the Suburb Museum in JoCo.

The real problem here is AEG and their intentional mismanagement of Kemper Arena. Kemper was much better under their old management, even after the Sprint Center had opened. AEG purposely ran Kemper into the ground. I don't understand how you could hire the same company to manage 2 competing arenas and not expect them to let one fail at the benefit of the other.

Funny how the American Royal Leaders (AEG) want to tear down Kemper (AEG) to push all the business to Sprint Center (AEG). Which cow do you think gives them the most milk?

Because if they fill both of them, they make twice the money than if they let one fail?

To state the obvious.... Kemper was a pile of shit before SC and is currently a pile of shit. Hence, the desperate need to construct SC.
