Just courious.  Should the people in those cities have an interest in downtown?  What about those that live in South KC?  North of the river?  East of Raytown?

actually, what i said very clearly is that i'd let one patrol car cover the plaza area south into brookside, indicating that i think one cop is probably enough for that large area.

On my way home this evening around 6:30 there were four bicycle cops stopped at the intersection of 10th and Wyandotte.  I then saw two of the officers together on 4th street in front of Minskys Pizza.  The way they were talking it sounded like at least one of them was new to being on bicycle patrol.  The funny part was that only one of them had a flashing rear led light which I believe is required by law when riding after dark.  Glad to see more officers out on the streets though.

I saw the bike cops tonight too...by the arena "speaking" with a homeless guy.....think the homeless will quickly find that the yellow coats aren't the only people they are going to be bothered by very quickly.

I saw them patrolling around Grand Slam about 9:00 last night, then they went north into the River Market.  They had a police car following them as they went so it might have been a training patrol.

The bike patrol was out late last night.  I saw the four of them again pulling into the Centennial Building just west of the Graphic Arts Building at 2am last night.

They must have a satelite office there because I see a lot of officers going into there during the day.

It's funny you say that because I was kicking myself last night for not checking what they were riding...especially since I own a couple of bikes myself.

Not sure what they're riding right now, but I heard they're supposed to be getting groovy new bikes for 2008.

KC police to patrol downtown on bicycles

A new squad of Kansas City bicycle officers will begin training on downtown streets tonight, the department announced this morning.

The new unit will have its official “roll-out” on Oct. 13 to coincide with the opening of the Sprint Center.

“We created this unit in an effort to support the downtown resurgence,” said Major Wayne Stewart of the Central Patrol Division.

One sergeant and eight officers will make up the unit, which will operate year-round from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m.

a side benefit of this will be more "people of status" bitching letting the city know about bike hazards, like grates, pot holes, and lights that don't see us.

Anybody find it odd the bike cops will run 365 days a year from 5pm to 3am....that is some COLD bike riding isn't it?

People should report where they see them to ensure they are really covering their entire beat (which is CBD and river market)

It does look weird to see a cop on a bicycle. I have seen them here in Topeka as far out as Wanamaker Rd. I have never seen them in hot pursuit.

they don't do hot pursuit. geez.

they patrol and make their presence known. they also sneak up on you very fast and very quietly.

you might laugh at cops on bikes wearing their strange bike gear, but never forget that they are still kcpd. they will still play whack a mole on your head if you deserve it, no matter what kind of gear they're wearing.

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck. It's a duck.
Just as your signature says These cops are just as tough in their Bike shorts and top as they are in the squad cars.

I saw two pairs of bike cops in the Crossroads last night.
