Zeppi's pizza at about 83rd and Wornall next to the Hen House.
Allens at 89th and State Line.  This place was the quintessential diner in south KC.

One of the bartenders regularly sold booze to underage girls, I was told. It's a shame. They had some great cookies, muffins and other dessert there.

I never made it, but I heard Soakie's had some of the best sandwiches in town.

in the eighties, they had GREAT sandwiches. it was probably the best sandwich place in kc forever and a day. when it became a gay bar about 89 or 90, the food was still the bomb, and i used to frequent in the daylight to get a good sandwich, but early 90's the gay bar part took over and the food went to hell. now i would have been fine with the gay bar taking over, but since the food went to shit, i was a little angry over it.

And everyone knows that Jesus would never approve of a gay bar being so close to an important tourist area. It might sinfully show outsiders what KC is really like!

I am not gay, but I am not happy that they squeezed out Soakies and the Morgue.

One thing I noticed when I was in Minneapolis last month is that they have a few gays bars incorporated right into their equivalent of the P&L District.  The first one we went into was completely by accident because we didn't except to find something like that in a tourist area in the midwest.

Does anyone remember the Rhumba Box?  Specifically, the address... I used to hang out there back in the day but never drove...I just remember it being very cold in the winter, they had to use space heaters... they had the best pop tarts and garage bands

That Chili shack across the street from City Hall (Oak and 11th-12th) seems to be closed.  All the equipment is cleared out.  Couldn't have been too long ago.  I believe I ate there within the last couple of months.  Too bad; I liked that place.

The city bought out his lease and equipment in order to end his long running feud with city hall.  I believe he is running for mayor.

The Chili Shack guy had led the crusade against the City's liberalization of street vendor regulations.  More recently when the vendors started getting closer to his joint he threatened litigation.  It was made all the more messier by the fact that he leased his space in the garage from the City.  Apparently business was bad enough for him to decide to take some money and walk away.  I believe the city has indicated that they expect another tennent in soon.

Much obliged LNXKCMO.  I never knew that street vendors were such a scourge on DT local businesses. &

Acapulco Mexican Restaurant - North of the River, just across the HOA
If i'm not mistaken this restaurant had been in business for over 50 years.  Looks like its now a Vietnamese restaurant.

Also north of the river on burlington.. KC's Rocking Ribs has called it quits.

With all the traffic on burlington.. you would think that places would do really well.

Not sure when it would have happened since I haven't been there in a while but Kim Son at 4th & Cherry might be gone.   I have their number programmed into my phone and when I called it yesterday to place an order I was told I had the wrong number.

I believe this was Jennie's before Kim Son.
