LindseyLohan wrote: I took it up to the River Market cycle shop. Ken said it's just the carbs, seemed pretty confident. So I'm going to have them rebuild those, check the valves, and put an electronic ignition on it.

What bothered me was I pulled the plugs one day and it looked like they were covered it oil...my sense of smell isnt the best, but I didn't think it smelled like gas...

And it was really strange that it ran perfect friday morning, and friday afternoon it was begging for a shit kicking. Wouldn't stay running but would keep starting. lots of gas or no gas would kill it. I wouldn't think dirty carbs would turn so ugly so quickly. I would expect a little foreshadowing...

anyways...for some reason I feel pretty comfortable with the shop in the river market. I'm going to pump about $800 into a $1100 motorcycle. (carbs=$300, valves=$300, igniton=$200) My total investment is still less than the difference on the insurance for a new motorcycle. Trying to stay optimistic...

I wish I had a freaking garage, I could probably handle and enjoy doing this myself....
what kind of bike do you have?

Question for those historians....when did KCMO begin licensing motorcycles?  I was given a license plate excavated from a construction site in River Market, plate date is 1920...and appears small like a motorcycle plate.  But that's pretty early for a cycle.  First bikes began appearing in mid to late teens.  Did cycles have license plates?  How large were auto plates?

Plate is 3.5" by 6.5", with the following print:  K.C.M.O.  #18123, dated 1920

is seafoam like Sta-bil?
I would think carbs too, but once you've sucked old/bad gas through the system things get fucked.

'78 suzuki gs750, it's old but I like it. If I got a new bike it would be the VTX1800. Insurance and lack of garage and riding time persuaded me out of that. Not to mention I would probably get to comfortable on it and kill myself. The one time I rode one, it sucked all of the fun out of my little V-Star...If I remember correctly, 0-60 in 3.7 seconds or so. Thats 2-3 seconds quicker than a Harley, and on par with alot of sport bikes...  :D

Isn't seafoam just a band aid? Makes you think everything is okay for a little while, and then the problems you had are beyond repair later.

One day I'll have a garage and I want to do a complete restore on a cb750k....that will be real badass...

anyone seen one of the Cooley's? Those things fucking rock. Especially the updated replica they made recently.

seafoam isn't a band aid. it doesn't temporarily fix anything. it cleans out all that gunk you might have in your fuel system (carbs).

I've got a KLR650. Just a fun little bike that's perfect for around town.

Couple questions:
Are there any bike shops in town that have a trailer or truck that will pickup a bike with a flat for a reasonable fee? I'll probably visit KC sometime this summer, and the thought of having a flat in some of the places I'm planning to ride make me uneasy. Also, what do you all think of MotorcycleCloseouts? Their website shows great variety and reasonable prices. How's their store?

Thanks!

Been on that road many times..in a car which is both worse (because it's wider) and better (can't see the drop off as well) than a motorbike.  It's a long way down to be sure, right into a max security federal prison.  Nice views off to the west though.  Another white knuckle drive in the area is the backroad between Canon City and Cripple Creek.  A few miles north of Canon City and it's a one lane road with a 800' drop on one side.

i rode yesterday. here's my brief report.

Went on a little ride yesterday with a couple of friends.

I rode my 1100 goldwing. Buddy from work rode his kawasaki meanstreak. His cousin had a brand new streetfighter style honda cbr599 with only 100 miles on the OD. I guess he got it broke in today.

We met at the QT in smithville, missouri with the intention of going to rulo, nebraska. I got the directions from a friend who has rode up there and he said to take 169 all the way til it ends and there will be a restaurant at the end at the missouri river.

We left smithville about 9:30 am and took 169 all the way up and ended up at mount ayr, iowa about 12:30 pm.

Our first stop for gas was about 10 miles short of the iowa border. My buddy with the kaw was getting low. He said it has a 4.3 gallon tank. I was at a quarter tank and filled up but him and his cousin didn't want to use ethanol so they both only got a gallon or so. We get to mt. ayr and guess what? The only station in a small town in iowa only has ethanol gas. I told them before, but they didn't believe me. We had lunch at this great little diner on the square called "peggy sue's". It has the drivers half of a red 57 chevy stuck up on the wall above the entrance. They had the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. Thin cut and they came with a little bowl of powdered sugar for some reason.

After we left we took hiway 2 east to 35 south. Drove about 80-85mph until we got to the nicest rest area I have ever seen in missouri. Took care of business and picked up some free maps and directions to 69 hiway. Rode on 69 all the way to liberty. Took awhile but a very decent 2 lane 65mp road. Curves, hills and no lights.

All in all a very nice ride. Beautiful day. Low traffic count. Lots of open road. Lots of open space. Saw these huge windmills right off of 169 up north by iowa.

Made 3 stops for gas, one stop to eat and one stop at the rest area. All of the bikes ran well with no problems. I continue to be amazed at how well my goldwing runs and how fast it will go and how long it will go fast. An amazing bike for being 26 years old. 5th gear seems to be the overdrive gear. I can run all day in 4th at high speed with no problems and great throttle response. I do gear up to 5th if I'm on flat terrain with no hills or curves, but that's just to bring down the revs. It loves high rpm's and never fails to give me lots of power when I want it.

With all the winding roads and meandering around I conservatively figure that we did at least 300 miles in about 8 hours.

the one i took yesterday was a great ride. 169 north till you get tired of riding. 69 hiway just north of the iowa border heading south was also very nice.

Here's a shot of the riders in the Run For The Wall, Memorial Run headed through town on I-70. Final destination: Washington DC for ceremonies this weekend at Arlington Nat. Cemetery and the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial. Roughly 300 bikes roared past me at the Benton Curve on I-70. I was on that deserted overpass over Truman Road that was originally supposed to be an entrance ramp from Benton & 13th.

If yoiu've never seen this kind of thing. (Patriot Guard, Veterans Runs) its incredibly moving just to watch it go by. To know what those guys have in their hearts and what some of them sacrificed for the freedom of this great land.

Remember them this Memorial Day weekend.

Motorcycle hits trash truck; two critically injured

Two persons were in critical condition after a motorcycle collided with a trash truck Monday night near Crown Center.

The accident happened just before 11 p.m. at Main Street and Pershing Road.

DJ Glayzer said he was driving just behind the motorcycle southbound on Main Street just before the accident. Glayzer said the motorcycle crossed through the intersection at Pershing Road, then collided with the trash truck, which had been northbound and was making a U-turn on Main, about 50 yards south of Pershing.

Police Sgt. Bill Mahoney said the truck may have been maneuvering to back into a garage area at the Westin Crown Center hotel.

A man and a woman on the motorcycle were taken to the hospital in critical condition, Mahoney said. He said the injuries suffered by the man driving the motorcycle were especially severe.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – An Excelsior Springs man was critically injured in a crash involving a car and a motorcycle.

Police say Justin Morgan, 29, was riding a motorcycle on northbound I-35 at U.S. 69 when he was struck by a car.

Investigators say prior to the collision, the car had swerved off the road, struck a guardrail, returned to the road, and then hit the motorcycle.

The woman driving the car was not seriously injured.

My motorcycle is still in the River Market shop...Almost a month..I'm starting to get irritated now. If I had the time and it wasn't such a hassle to transport it somewhere else, I would differ the situation. Right now I'm just trying to hold my cool and hope they will get to it soon...

I missed out last weekend on a once in never opportunity. The woman and the kid went out of town and left me home alone for a week. I could of enjoyed the beautiful weather and rode all day and all night....

Is this typical of a motorcycle repair shop?
