Probably good business, no reason bignets can't be as numerous and donuts.

The metal cladding on top of the building connected to the west of Missie Bs is being removed. Not sure what the plan is, but the brick on the second floor is becoming visible - looks nice.

Wasn't that building a small movie theater a long time ago? And wasn't it a venue for rock shows in the early 80s?kcjak wrote:The metal cladding on top of the building connected to the west of Missie Bs is being removed. Confusing. So the beignet place was looking for something with a cafe feel, but they open in the to go window instead of the the former Latin Bistro, old Mama's or the burrito place next to High Dive? Whatever goes in, I hope they have some staying power.

I think eventually that whole Beignet and Nica (Forget the new name of the place) empire will crumble fairly soon. It seems like every week they are offering groupons/living social deals for Nicas. They have also received from pretty bad reviews from some bloggers and yelpers in the past

I like the beignet place in City Market but it might be too specialized to survive and is maybe not the kind of biz that can be supplemented with something like catering or distribution. Nica's is not bad but is heavy and excessively complicated. They should have a feel by now for what does and doesn't work and alter their biz model to survive. If they can't figure out the biz side, they shouldn't be expanding.

Looks like the guy at the new bbq joint got his 1:30 liquor license, he told me it was a hard fight to get it past midnight. I couldn't get a 1:30 because my crowd is so ruckus. Wait that's the crowd that parks in our lot that uses the three o'clock bar down the street. (free parking for them with all their cover charges) Now he's going to build it out, he wanted to wait first before he wasted any money. Could be interesting what he his going to do. Wish him all the best! But to drop a quarter of a mil on 39th street is very risky doing bbq/gastro pub.

Are there any traffic studies that one can help answer this question?
Each time I'm on 39th, its over-burdened with hasty drivers.
The intersection at State Line needs re-paving & a dedicated left turn light & (an implausible) widening.

I agree it's a gaggle on 39th west. I'm glad I'm located on west 39th.(the other end, the uncool edge)

You are right. That strip mall with Peanches in it is definitely uncool!

Noticed tonight that the building west of Missy B's has had some siding removed from the facade, exposing the original brick. There's a painted sign reading "Vanden Boom" and "Open Evenings". Is that a new, retro sign, or was there once something there called Vanden Boom?

Re: wtf is happening to w. 39th?!
There might have been a business called Vandenboom's Furniture there at one time. They had a location at 38th and Broadway as well, so that might have been their original location, since the store at 38th and Broadway appears larger.
There is an ad for the store on this link, as well as a photo of the store on Broadway if you scroll down far enough.

Its a cool sign, it should stay. Its practically invisible behind those trees so why replace it with a functional never-seen sign?

Yeah, I saw Toots and the Maytals there. (and The Zoo, regularly).
Parody Hall moved from there to the River Market, in the 200 block of Main. Where the parking lot for Riverbend Condos is now.
The 39th Street address was home to King Henry's Feast, prior to Parody Hall. Now THAT was dinner theater.
