I assume it's too early to know how fucked this is by the coronavirus?

Too early but it won't just be this downtown hotel if travel scare hits this summer. The corporate operated hotels can absorb the hit but the independently operated (franchised) ones are more of a concern.

SXSW in Austin just cancelled (edit: 400K attendance). They intended to go on but major vendors/scouts and film buyers were pulling out and then mayor declared 'local disaster' so they cancelled it.

Maybe CV can be reasonably contained but if it spreads to a significant degree, gotta say fuck it and let life happen. Worth the effort to contain for now.

It is bad guys. Chicago is getting hit by major convention cancellations, as is Orlando. The shutdown is probably prudent, but the hits to travel and convention are real and going to get worse.

Yeah there are a lot of cancellation going on.

It's not probably that impactful for this hotel given its just opening.

Capping the loop would do wonders for this project and all of downtown.

Representatives for Loews did not respond to requests for comments and would not say whether it still planned to open its doors on April 2, the day Lucas' state of emergency declaration is set to expire.

The mayor's office told the Business Journal on Tuesday that it will re-evaluate whether to extend the order past the original 21 days as the city approaches the end of the initial order, but it is too soon to predict if it will need to be extended.

There's like a 0% chance that the hotel opens on time.

I bet they would get paid to do this so the odds certainly isn't zero.

‘It Happened So Fast’: Hotels are Now Coronavirus Ghost Towns

Now, the industry in the States alone is seeking $150 billion in bailout money from the federal government, with the head of the American Hotel & Lodging Association Chip Rogers declaring the pandemic, “already has had a more severe impact on the hotel industry than 9/11 and the 2008 recession combined.” STR, the hospitality data firm, released figures showing that last week saw steep drops in occupancy and rates in major destinations including San Francisco, New York City, and Seattle. This week will be significantly worse. Marriott, which employs 130,000 people in the U.S. alone, announced it will begin cutting hours and furloughing employees.
