edit: The below snapshots are from early this morning. IHME already bumped up the estimates higher than below. See sources at bottom for latest.
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation has a more optimistic outlook for 35K-150K US COVID deaths than Fauci's 100K-240K estimate...
However it projected 638-781 deaths for March 31...
...when while just one data point, the 'actual' tally for March 31 shot up to 912. This is the first day US passed Italy and Spain in daily deaths.

Now, more data showing people without symptoms are fueling the spread has top officials rethinking whether the general public should be wearing masks.
New data from Iceland shows 50% of those who tested positive said they were asymptomatic.
In the US, an estimated 25% of coronavirus carriers have no symptoms, said the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"Information that we have pretty much confirmed now is that a significant number of individuals that are infected actually remain asymptomatic. That may be as many as 25%," CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield told NPR.
To prevent further spread, the top infectious disease expert in the US says health officials are reconsidering guidance on face masks.

Boosting global N95 class mask production and supply chains to 100s of millions per day should be a top 5 global priority. Flood the market to avoid these games. Could also allow getting workforce back sooner.

The rise is per week, not total. So 10M total rise in 2 weeks in addition to 5.7M already.
The astonishing increase in new claims suggests the unemployment rate shot up to around 10% at the end of March from an official 3.5% rate in February that marked a 50-year low. Never before has the unemployment rate risen so much so quickly.

And btw, the take away here isn't that we need to increase the production of N95 masks and other PPE (although we should do that, because we will need more in the future), the take away is that there is no shortage, but rather merely an unwillingness of the US gov to use its authority to obtain needed supplies for domestic medical workers who are in crises.
For those that did not click and read, here is the mind blowing stat.
By the end of the day, roughly 280 million masks from warehouses around the U.S. had been purchased by foreign buyers and were earmarked to leave the country, according to the broker — and that was in one day.
The writer gets into why that happened in the article. And it basically comes down to the federal governments inaction and laissez faire attitude. They are trying to push the blame down to states, but states can't get it done on their own.

Yeah, is why we need *global* hyper mass mask production, so that there's more than enough for all. And enough to replace often as well, globally. This a global issue so we can't think in terms of nationalism.

If only say 30-50% of countries are capable of producing enough masks and they ban exporting then there won't be enough to solve a global problem. Global problems can be managed with collaboration, not self-centered nationalism.
