I thought all the espn zones closed.

The only 2 left are Anaheim and LA. I am sure the novelty of them wore off.

Those places suck. No surprise. Is there a similar concept that doesn't?

Not that I know of. The Vegas one wasn't bad for a sports bar....not eating.

The map is just funny given they have a USA map and two dots a cm apart.

What is wrong with watching a game at Johnny's P+L or any of the other half-dozen bars with huge TVs around it? 100% Serious question.

I think P+L has the sports bar angle covered. #justsaying

Lol...Nobody is saying they dont.  P&l Johnny's is a great sports bar. Best in the city if you ask me.

It was just an offtopic convo about espnzones and that would have brought more foot traffic to 14th street.

I think I agree with that.  As far as TV overload, it probably has the best TV setup in the city.  Also, it has a few things going for it as the official Sam's Army watch spot for most USA soccer matches and the MLB package.  Not sure if they still do, but they had a Tuesday night deal last summer with deals on beer and burgers, along with every MLB game basically on TV.

...and they operate it as a first class sports bar....TVs aren't left on ESPNU after a game...audio is used for big games.  Game distribution on TVs is pretty well spaced around the bar.  They don't have the one huge tv but they have a ton of really big tvs everywhere....

Thought Downtown was getting an 810 Zone at one time.  Not sure if downtown needs that though.

Johnny's has good specials on food/beer every night of the week. There's a reason why it's consistently busy every night compared to its neighbors.

Now if they could only train servers to not make disparaging comments to me about black customers not tipping him/her (yes, really).

Could not be less shocked that that happened.

did you bring it up to a manager?  include it in a yelp review?

you should.

I'm actually rather shocked by it.  I spent years as a waiter putting myself through college and even if I was so inclined to discuss such things with fellow waiters, I would NEVER say anything like that to a customer.  Just felony dumb.

TK made a racist joke first he forgot to tell you :)

That's too bad...I've been there quite a few times and the wait staff is fairly professional, definitely out of line.

I'm fairly surprised, too. I watched almost all the Chiefs games there last year, and the Super Bowl. Service was hit and miss, but I definitely never had anything like that happen!

I don't think it was a Johnny's or Cordish thing at all. It was a server accidentally blurting out something extraordinarily ignorant. The original Johnny's in Lawrence has a relatively diverse and interesting North Lawrence (the town's traditional 'black' neighborhood) crowd.

If we want to be honest, P+L bars are 100X more diverse than Grinders or the Foundry or any other popular bars for white people. In many way P+L has brought together a lot of folks to work, dine and party that normally wouldn't coexist in the same space. These kinds of hiccups of straight ignorance will continue happening if the city continues to desegregate and build up urban neighborhoods.

The server knew immediately she said the wrong thing and I think was embarrassed as she avoided me until I asked for the check a half hour later. I didn't follow up with the manager because I think it was just her using her mouth instead of her brain. I like Johnny's P+L and next time I'll probably ask for the server I had previously (who happens to be black) and was awesome.

Servers like that set the bar really low. It was my experience that when you take care of people who aren't used to having good service, they take care of you.

Houlihan's was going to lease the Famous Dave's location, but the deal has fallen through.
