The Kickapoo's have had a sign on that site for a couple of years saying a casino was coming.

Re: OFFICIAL: Proposed KCK Casino
from the unified gov't:
Plans to build a $300-million+ destination resort casino in Wyandotte County are moving into the expected legal challenge phase of the effort. Last week Kansas Attorney General Paul Morrison filed a lawsuit with the State Supreme Court contending the new casino gambling law is unconstitutional.
The lawsuit was requested by Governor Kathleen Sebelius as a way to quickly settle legal questions surrounding the law which was passed by the Kansas Legislature in April. The law allows state-owned casinos and racetrack slot machines in Wyandotte County, Sumner County, Ford County and Cherokee or Crawford County.
Taking the legal challenge directly to the Supreme Court is designed to speed the process and allow the development process to advance on schedule. As the legal issue is dealt with in Topeka, developers are pulling together their proposals for Wyandotte County.
The Unified Government is advancing the selection process for a destination resort casino on a dual track. Developers are asked to submit one packet dealing with land use, including zoning issues, and a second, separate package detailing specific plans for the destination resort casino.
The planning and zoning packets, identifying where the casinos would be located, will be made public on September 24 after they are submitted. The second packet, outlining the details of the proposals, will not be made public until presented to the Unified Government Commission for review and action.
The review and endorsement process begins September 24 and will conclude in early December when developers will actually present their plans to the UG Commission in public meetings.
Here are the key dates for the casino review and endorsement process:
September 24: Proposals submitted to Unified Government
November 6-8: Planning Commission considers zoning in public meeting. (multiple meetings if needed). Citizen comments on zoning issues allowed during public hearing.
November 26-30: Unified Government Board of Commissioners holds public hearings on zoning and land use recommendations from the Planning Commission.
December 3-7: Developers make public presentations to the Unified Government Board of Commissioners. Commission will review, discuss and endorse preferred proposals.
December 31: Deadline for submitting endorsed proposals to Kansas Lottery Commission.

Perhaps the KC Hard Rock will be in casino form brought to us by a now familiar name.

Re: OFFICIAL: Proposed KCK Casino
This is probably a good location for it. I'd much rather drive out to the Speedway to play some craps than out north in the middle of nowhere.
I know many on here want to revitalize downtown KCK, but I don't think a casino is a good way to do that.
Isn't Harrah's making a bid too? I imagine they'll be tough to beat.

Re: OFFICIAL: Proposed KCK Casino
Harrahs is not in the State of Kansas anymore. They sold the Prairie Band Pottawatomie Indians their casino SW of Mayetta earlier this year. I do not know if they are going to hop on the destination casino bandwagon though. the thing with the proposed casino near Kansas Speedway is that it will eventually close the Sac and Fox and Golden Eagle Casinos near Horton. Which would probably mean a loss of jobs for those that work at these establishments.

I think its much more likely to affect the Missouri casinos than one way out near Horton.anniewarbucks wrote: Harrahs is not in the State of Kansas anymore. No it was part of the deal with the State of Kansas to build this new casino. They would have to close both of the ones by Horton just to place this new one by KCK.

Re: OFFICIAL: Proposed KCK Casino
I do not think this is accurate. The new state law makes no mention of the current (or future) Indian casinos. They are not even overseen by the same state agencies. Plus, if this were the case, you would be seeing even more screaming and lawsuits out of the reservation interests than you already are. Now they are concerned just with competition shrinking their revenue. If they were going to be forced to close completely they would be firing all guns.anniewarbucks wrote: They the Sac and Fox and the Kickapoo Indian tribes. And they are by Horton.

Guess you have never been to NE Oklahoma. Many, many Indian land casino's down there and into Tulsa and they are being rebuilt bigger and better. And there will be one state casino accross the KS line in the future. These things usually bring more people into play. Business may be down for awhile but if the property is good then the business will be back.anniewarbucks wrote: the proposed casino near Kansas Speedway is that it will eventually close the Sac and Fox and Golden Eagle Casinos near Horton. I may be right. I may be wrong. But there is a lot of gray area in-between.

Awesome location for a casino. Just awesome. I was sure they would end up putthing this out in the middle of nowhere by verizon or something, but this really ties in well with the speedway area. Plus, this location will surely have highrise hotels etc overlooking the speedway.
BTW, the casinos in rural ks are a joke.

Re: OFFICIAL: Proposed KCK Casino
Why build a casino near a speedway, major amusement park, wildly popular regional furniture outlet and outdoor store, and an entertainment/shopping district, when you can build it near a huge statue of a tornado?!??
Tornado tower and Oz-themed casino could be a winning combination

This is great for the economy! Nothing better than seeing low-income people fall further into debt and require more public assistance, just so we can transfer wealth to charlatans. (Ooops! "Entertainment execs")
Maybe one day, we'll just have casinos everywhere. Put em in the Hen Houses. DMVs. Have a roulette table in the corner of McDonald's, next to that big "Red Box" machine. A slot machine at the dry cleaners, hell I dunno.....

Re: OFFICIAL: Proposed KCK Casino
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Speedway and the Cordish Co. will seek to jointly develop and manage a state-owned casino at the racetrack, Kansas Speedway says.
Track president Jeff Boerger said a proposal will come next week, referring to a deadline for Wyandotte County casino proposals to be filed with the county government.
Boerger said the casino likely would be on the east side of track complex northwest of where Interstate 70 and I-435 intersect. But Boerger declined to give any specifics about the plan.
He said a half-dozen casino companies have approached speedway officials in recent months wanting to collaborate on a gambling project.
Baltimore-based Cordish developed two south Florida Hard Rock resort casinos that the Seminole tribe owns. The company also is developing the Power & Light entertainment district in downtown Kansas City, Mo.
And Cordish already is working with Kansas Speedway owner International Speedway Corp. of Florida on an entertainment project in Daytona Beach, Fla. The companies announced in May that they’re developing the $250 million Daytona Live theater, hotel and dining project at Daytona International Speedway.

max...so you'd rather drive west in the middle of nowhere than the north in the middle of nowhere to play craps? Seems like a wash to me.

Low Income people falling further into debt? Can't they just go to the PayDay Loans places on Main Street. Figure we don't need any new construction for that. Infrastructure already in place. By the way, how miserable does an Oz themed casino sound. All the waitresses dressed like Dorthy and the yellow brick road to the war table.Maitre D wrote: This is great for the economy! There is a lot of stuff around the proposed casino in VW. There is nothing around the casinos up north.KCPowercat wrote: max...so you'd rather drive west in the middle of nowhere than the north in the middle of nowhere to play craps? Seems like a wash to me.
