You can get authentic hearty Mexican food here in KC, and there are dozens of little places that offer their own variations and dish selections depending on what part of Mexico the owners tend to be. But there's no place that offers a more subtle sit down meal and the more sophisticated and interesting dishes that Mexican cuisine has to offer.
KC Region is all part of the same animal regardless of state and county lines.
Think on the Regional scale.

Try Ninfa's on the north side of Kansas Ave. just west of 7th street. A hole in the wall, but the best home-made tortillas you will find in KC.

Dude If it is vegetarian it is NOT Mexican food. We love fat, in fact some people when going out for tacos ask the server, can you add some "gordito" to the taco and gordito means fatty, so they are actually asking to add fat to the taco. Diet, who cares we will die anyway, I have a friend that says "Marrano pero sano" Transalation "Like a pig but healthy" and that makes me laugh.of course, i am a prissy vegetarian and i presume that none of these places serve vegetarian food
Good places.. El Pueblito I love that place but the only thing I order there is soft tacos on corn tortilla, you can choose from Asada (Steak), Pollo (Chicken), Lengua (You will ove it - tongue) and I am sad they do not have sesos(brain of the cow) anymore.
Cafe Guadalajara, good place, but it is more like what you would find in a restaurant in Mexico.
Independence Ave, at night has great tacos stands on the street.
Central Avenue .. I liked a couple of thing in Herrera's Super Market, they have a little restaurant next to the supermarket.
Other thig you guys can try is what we calle Aguas "Water" pretty much is the fruit of the session with sugar or what some people call here Fruit Juices .. The places where they sell those are called Paleterias which come from Palete - Posycole man I do not know the spellingin english. My favorite ones are on Central Ave. "Paleteria Michoacana", on the Boulevard there is a nother one almost next to "El Pueblito".
You guy slet me know and I will take you on an expedition.

Mexican Buffet on Santa Fe in Olathe. Another hole in the wall, but incredilby popular. I've heard from a friend that groups of Sprint workers travel all the way to Olathe from Sprint HQ to eat lunch there. LOL. Must be good!

El Pueblito on the Blvd. Their rice is amazing.
El Taconazo is my favorite. Just east of 7th and Kansas Ave. Get the enchiladas verdes.

I just saw a program that claims nachos were invented by a Mexican who was entertaining some American military wives and had nothing around in his kitchen except stale chips and cheese. Apparently Americans love nachos while Mexicans don't care for it.

Does La Hacienda at 3rd and Ks. Ave still exist?
I've been going there since I was born1952.
Haven't been back lately, (i'm in Oregon) but 3 am on the weekends and the daughter being on an episode of COPS made it my favorite mexi place ever.

I am not sure If the restauramt still exists. I have not driven by that area for awhile, but I do remember there are a couple of restaurants on Kansas Ave. I ate in one around 4 years ago and it was ok, but I do not recall seeing La Hacienda. I will drive by and give you an update.Hey TM,

Admittedly, I would not know authentic mexican food if it came up and bit my cajones, but I tried "Cancun Fast & Pronto" this weekend and it was really good. It's the place on Pennsylvania in Westport - formerly La Croix's.Good places.. El Pueblito I love that place but the only thing I order there is soft tacos on corn tortilla, you can choose from Asada (Steak), Pollo (Chicken), Lengua (You will ove it - tongue) and I am sad they do not have sesos(brain of the cow) anymore.
I assumed it would be super crappy TexMex catering to the late night crowd. However, they have what they called "authentic street tacos" (they did have a real name for them - I would butcher the spanish names) - they had steak (asada), a spiced beef, a pork, a sausage (not chorizo, but something similar and tasty) - plus tongue and brain. All of the "street" tacos were small, on soft tortillas and topped with onion and cilantro.
I tried the spiced beef, sausage - and then a regular ground beef, hard shell taco. They tasted great. All were $1.75/each.
If it doesn't have street-level retail, it's an abortion.

I've always wanted to do a bike-based "Tour de Taquerias" and hit up all of the carts and holes in the walls in the neighborhoods. I'd love to have a well-informed tour, though I've tried a lot of places.ThaMexican wrote: You guy slet me know and I will take you on an expedition.

Was there on Monday night and had a rare disappointment. It was bland and service was shoddy. I hope it was an anomoly.ralfonso wrote: El Pueblito on the Blvd. Their rice is amazing.

As a former vegetarian who was living in South Texas, I acknowledge that eating Mexican food involved a certain amount of plausible deniability. That being said, you might want to try Tienda Casa Paloma (http://www.casapaloma.com/). It's at about 83rd and Metcalf, serving a more interior style of Mexican food. For example, pipian sauces and mole. I seem to recall that they had some veggie entrees (my veggie friend had a squash blossom quesadilla). Plus the vibe is a little granola, so they will probably be willing to accommodate you.

I've only tried a few places but Taqueria Mexico is by far my favorite, I eat there 1-2 times a week.
My two experiences with Manny's have comprised of shitty service (even when the place was half-empty and our server had only 2 tables) and bland food that didn't taste any different from suburban national chains.

manny's doesn't even taste as good as the chains. i'll take on the border over manny's any day. manny's tastes like Carlito's in Raytown or like something you'd get from a sub-par taco truck on 12th street.scooterj wrote:... and bland food that didn't taste any different from suburban national chains.

I noticed when we were in last week that they had just hired a new gringo waitress and she was struggling quite a bit; I wonder if you got the same gal.staubio wrote: Was there on Monday night and had a rare disappointment. It was bland and service was shoddy. I hope it was an anomoly.

Actually, Manny's has always been one of my favorites. I have, however, only been back once in the last 10 years and that was a couple of years ago and I was a bit disappointed....both in the food and the ambience. When I first starting going there, it was much smaller and had a bit of an edge to it. Now it seems like it tries to cater more for the masses....which normally means watered down mexican food when it comes to spices.chrizow wrote: manny's doesn't even taste as good as the chains. i'll take on the border over manny's any day. manny's tastes like Carlito's in Raytown or like something you'd get from a sub-par taco truck on 12th street.
However, I still feel it easily is better than Ponaks which I have never liked.

Nope. She was there but wasn't our server. We had a Mexican woman but she seemed to be going to the gringa for advice and such, so perhaps she was even newer.LenexatoKCMO wrote: I noticed when we were in last week that they had just hired a new gringo waitress and she was struggling quite a bit; I wonder if you got the same gal.
I can get over the service at a Mexican place, though. The food just wasn't that great this time.
