Yeah, I went to the Majestic one night last year with my cousin.  They had some good jazz in the basement.  This was a really great place and we had a good time.  I would definitely like to go back again.

Plus, they didn't appear to have any problem serving us underage folks some alcohol!

I can't say I know much about jazz, but I would think the club that is slated for the site south of the President Hotel should specialize in authentic KC-style jazz at least most of the time. That will be perhaps the first thing conventioners will see when they enter P&L. Any jazz connoisseurs in the crowd would expect as much.

Beermo wrote: you must go see this awesome jump blues band that is from k.c. they are "the grand marquis" and they play all over town at all sorts of places, but you can catch them every thursday evening at the jazz on 39th.  while that's not the best venue to see them at it's a regular one. after checking their calender i see that they are playing at 40 sardines new years eve.  great band. they got a female drummer, a sax guy who plays all 4 of his saxes, a trumpet player who is also great and a guy who plays the upright bass.  they also dress sorta period style. if you're into jazz, blues, swing, big band, then i highly recommend you see these guys.

I've seen this band a couple years ago at The Jazz location north of the river.  They are very good.  I wouldn't mind seeing them again.

I like the Phoenix a lot. Very cool bar and a laid back atmosphere.

The Blue Room has some of the best talent, but I don't like the atmosphere there. You can't smoke, which is a positive for many, but I need a smoky bar to hear jazz. Also, it just seems like the atmosphere of the place is uptight - it is technically a museum.

But the place is historic and like I said, they ususally get some of the better acts.

By the way, if it wasn't apparent from Michael's post, I'm clueless about jazz.

That's cool. I'll give the Blue Room another chance.

I was brought to The Phoenix by, surprise, my JoCo friends. I was probably just impressed that there was a jazz club downtown (I was living in Lawrence at the time).

And I'm not completely clueless about jazz. I know who Jimmy Gillespie and Drew Ellington were.

Instead of dissing places like the Phoenix, I think you just have to take it for what it is.  There is jazz as performance and jazz as entertainment.  The Phoenix books more entertainer-minded musicians and less performance-minded.  A jazz snob is only interested in performance and disregards most entertainers even if they are effectively entertaining.

There are just about as many below avg 'performers' in town as there are 'entertainers'.  But there are many good ones in both camps too.  More than most cities twice the size of KC.
