[urlhttp://www.publicbroadcasting.net/kcur/news.ne ... bee?s.Move]City Reveals Gain from Applebee's Move[/url]
As explained, the deal would cost the city less than $20,000 a year in revenues, but would bring in over $300,000 in earnings tax from the 380 jobs gained - at an average salary of $90,000 a year.

Wonder if KS puts this type of numbers to their incentive plans before offering 80M to 12 jobs??

The Earth is about 6,000 years old. 3,000 years would just be silly.bobbyhawks wrote: 13.75 Billion Years X the Bible = around 3,000 years

I realize this is all in jest but every time I hear about Kansans and bible thumpers and anti-evolution passion, I always enjoy pointing out that KU is among the top schools in the country when it comes to the evolutionairy based science of Paleontology:bobbyhawks wrote: 13.75 Billion Years X the Bible = around 3,000 years

Sorry to perpetuate the bad image. I grew up in Kansas and went to KU, so I was just as you said making the comment in jest. There are probably twice as many crazy religious zealots in Missouri as there are in Kansas, just by the difference in population alone. Kansas still gets hammered because they don't have enough "liberal" cities to prevent the literalists from getting elected to majorities.Highlander wrote: I realize this is all in jest but every time I hear about Kansans and bible thumpers and anti-evolution passion, I always enjoy pointing out that KU is among the top schools in the country when it comes to the evolutionairy based science of Paleontology:

My friends in SF were always amazed when I told them I had a Dem governor, congressman and state legislator. Of course, now I have none.

Definitely a case of pointing out the splinter in someone else's eye when you have a log in your own. The crazy religious people in California are at least as crazy as the crazy religious people in Kansas. And there's more of them if only because of the size of the population.

Hey now, Kansas is awesome, it's just that the misguided seem to vote in greater numbers than sensible unionized people.

Kansas is a victim of representative democracy. When you're putting all your bets on moderate republicans you're screwed.

I love Kansas about as much as anybody I've ever known, but Fresno is better than Wichita, and Wichita is the only city in Kansas.
And while I think there are a couple notable regions of truly rare natural beauty in Kansas, more than the average state (especially the average midwestern state) California is pretty amazing. In fact, I'd say Cali is as lovely as it gets in this country outside of West Virginia. It is true that they have their own special sun that they don't share with anybody else.

One of Kansas' biggest problems is that it is almost all private land. The state has the 7th least amount of public land by acreage of any state in the union, and the least by percentage (.92%) in a landslide. I encourage anyone curious about supporting outdoor opportunities in the state to check out the following link: http://www.kansaswildscape.org/. Kansas Wildscape has been involved in numerous projects to increase awareness and opportunities in the state.chrizow wrote: i assume one beautiful region youre referring to is the flint hills. what are the others?

The Smoky Hills out by Wilson and the Red Hills around Medicine Lodge are very pretty. I've always liked driving through SE/NE Kansas's rolling landscape at harvest time. The area people associate with Kansas as flat and dusty are the Goodland/Colby area along I 70 or the Liberal area in the SW. The Arkansas Valley is kind of flat and uneventful but the Arkansas River itself is very interesting.chrizow wrote: i assume one beautiful region youre referring to is the flint hills. what are the others?
I'd like to see a more ambitious project to restore the tallgrass prairie than just what is going on in the Flint Hills with eventual re-establishment of Bison and wolves. Perhaps do the same with shortgrass out in the Medicine Lodge area. Kansas also has German and Scandinavian communities like Lindsborg although the ties back to the fatherland become ever more tenuous with time.

Kansas City Council committee advances Applebee’s HQ proposal
The city’s industrial development plan grants industrial revenue bonds and ad valorem tax abatements for the project to leverage the Missouri Quality Jobs program offered to Applebee’s parent company DineEquity Inc. (NYSE: DIN).
Bonds will finance about $2.2 million in machinery, equipment and furniture costs associated with Applebee’s move to the office building near Ward Parkway Mall.
A memo prepared by the Economic Development Corp. of Kansas City projects $1.7 million in net revenue for Kansas City and modest net revenue for taxing jurisdictions such as Jackson County, the Kansas City, Mo., School District and others.
Tax abatements on personal property associated with the project are expected to reach $120,000, according to city documents, with the city’s share representing $23,000.
