Re: Regionality Check!
I think Freeway is a specifically western term. Denver is about the first city you'll come to (heading west) where people regularly refer to interstates and state roads as freeways. I've lived here and in California so long, I can't use any other word.bahua wrote: Freeway is not a term that's used in Illinois. At least, not in an official capacity. It's rare to find a person that refers to a road as a freeway, and no roads are ever referred to as a "freeway" by signs. Same with the word "turnpike."

Re: Regionality Check!
My guess on that is that, especially in the L.A. area, there are so many state roads and interstates that it's just easier to say, "The 55, the 22, the 91, the 101", etc. In Denver people refer to the roads as freeways, but no one says "the 70" or "the 25" except for those of us who moved here from California and can't break the habit.GuyInLenexa wrote: I like how Californians use the term "The 405" "The 5" etc.
In TX we always used the term Freeway, except some of the older onew were called expressway (North Central in Dallas) . Most of our freeways had names, unlike KC. Like LBJ, North Central, R.L Thorton, Carpenter.
I once noticed on an old map of KC that the KS side of I35 was once called Turkey Creek Expressway.
Did any of the other freeways in the metro ever have actual "names"?

What about El Dorado...
It can be pronounced correctly like " El Durahdo" or the incorrect way of "El Doraydo."

Depends on what you are referring to. El Dorado, KS is "daRAYdo." Quite a bit of that around Wichita actually. The Arkansas River is "Ar-Kansas" not "ArKANsaw." The street Greenwich is "GreenWitch" not "Grinich."Tosspot wrote: What about El Dorado...

That's interesting. I actually think it's L.A. specific, as I've never heard people in San Diego refer to "the 8, the 5", etc.bbqboy wrote: Not true. Only in SoCal do they say the 5. One you get above the grapvine it is totally different.

Evidently Versailles, MO is prounounced "ver-SAILZ" instead of "ver-SIGH" like it should be. Makes my hair stand on end hearing it that way. And Nevada, MO is pronounced "neh-VAY-duh".lock+load wrote: Depends on what you are referring to. El Dorado, KS is "daRAYdo." Quite a bit of that around Wichita actually. Warshburn University as some people call it here in Topeka. Pisses me off!advocrat wrote: How many around here pronounce the word for, and it comes ou sounding like "fer"?

Also, CRICK instead of Creek. Assinine.
Winda instead of Window. Pilla instead of Pillow. Those are usually said by older folks.

No, Versailles is actually pronounced "vair-sigh." Versailles, IL is pronounced wackily, as "vuhr-sales."LenexatoKCMO wrote: Thats just as bad as Kay-Roh Illinois (Cairo).
