Cute place, super friendly, good neighborhood crowd, pretty laid back, free Wi-Fi, and a great place to work during the afternoon.

Had a Spanish-style tomato soup and a chocolate chip cookie for lunch, both of which were pretty good.

Is this place open for dinner or just breakfast and lunch?

I'd call, as they're still figuring out how they want to operate.  The door said they were open until 6:30 weekdays.  There's no dinner menu.  No reason you can't have a sandwich or soup for dinner, but it doesn't seem like a place I would want to eat dinner.

Also, they only have 1-2 soups available at any given time, which owner Todd indicated to another customer was a source of frustration for some visitors who expected soup nazi-style choices.  You can get soup-to-go sometimes too, though they didn't have any today.

I think that's mostly right, but i think they're open till 5:30 during the week and they open at 9 on sundays.

Just got back from a great breakfast at Happy Gillis Cafe.

For breakfast, they have Croque Madame, 2 eggs choice of meat & toast, or a breakfast sandwich.  They also had a special of biscuits and gravy.  I had the breakfast sandwich and it was really yummy.

Lunch is mainly sandwiches - BLT, chicken salad, egg salad, Ham, turkey, bahn mi, grilled cheese, mufaletta, autostrada and a few more, plus the soup, of course.

Breakfast is $4-6.  Most sandwiches are $7.

I think the hours were 8-6:30 Tues-Fri, 9-5:30 on Sat, and I forget Sunday.

It has a very similar vibe as You Say Tomato.  Very down home and neighborhood oriented.  I like HGC so much better than Cascone's or the Diner.  Can't wiat to go back and try it for lunch.

My wife and I ate here Sunday afternoon and we liked it. It's in Columbus Park on Gillis. It reminds me of a junior version of You Say Tomato, and has that vibe that the old Bluebird Cafe used to have. It offers great views of downtown and reasonably priced lunches and small breakfast items. I'm not sure the location is great, but Kansas City doesn't have enough neighborhood places like this, IMO. Here's to hoping it can stay open longer than a year.

There will be a breast cancer charity event on Saturday 11am-3pm at Happy Gillis. They will be serving snow cones from some kind of retro ice cream trailer thing. Just thought I'd let everyone know.

That would be Fresher Than Fresh.

I've heard great things, but haven't tried.

I've gotten a couple sandwiches which are AMAZING love the Bahn Mi and the Curry Chicken Salad, sooo tasty, always been out of soup when i get there though around 1 or 2 in the afternoon, wish they'd increase the amount they made so as to not run out everyday. But GREAT FOOD, Great People, Cool Atmosphere. TRY IT!!!

happy gillis is pretty awesome.

small menu sort of like You Say Tomato (even smaller actually), but a similar vintage, neighborhood vibe.  very friendly.

had a "Keller-esque BLT" which was a BLT with two farm eggs on it.  it was delicious!  it seemed a bit pricey at $8 (no sides), especially since you can get a full plate of brunch at places like Bluestem and Room 39 for $8, but it was good.

also, their lunch/dinner menu looks tasty (lots of sandwiches, soup, etc.) and they are open until 5 Mon-Wed and until 6 or 6:30 Thurs-Sat or something like that.  a good option for tasty food in the early evening.

they also have a small selecton of wine and beer that is pretty solid.

Business at Happy Gillis seems to be picking up.  There is typically a wait for tables on the weekends nowadays.

As great and charming as the current location is, it is really tiny.  Every time I walk by the vacant spot at the City Market entrance where the Asian market used to be, I think it would be perfect for Happy Gillis.

yeah it was full at 9:30 or so sunday morning.  while the couch area is comfy, they could probably put a few more tables there and open things up a bit.  that place must only sit 15 people or something.
