I went there several times when I lived on Valentine, and it seemed like the tables were always dirty. The food was awful. But there's nothing like being hit on by drag queens singing Bob Segar songs and hot trannies at 2AM. Sorry to see it go.

I went once, about four or five years ago, and it was disgusting. But the storefront has always been a comfort to me as I pass.

Nick Haines & KCReview just had Michael Bay on a couple weeks ago as an opponent to the Minimum Wage Increase issue. Said he would just have to pass on the increase to the customers via menu prices. Not anymore I guess.

Seriously though, hasn't the place closed like three times in the past decade?

I think that Nichols brought this on to itself. They had their signature dishes but they let others go by the wayside. You could not count on the quality of the food from one visit to the next. The wait staff was spread to thin. And this closed one day out of the week was not a bright idea. They neaded to clean up their act for some time now. I do agree that the place was very dirty. The ceiling tiles were so black with cigarette smoke that they had the smoke cobwebs hanging down from the tiles. I do agree that the only thing that was a positive was the front of the restaurant. I only had 1 positive about the restaurant. I and my partner were probably the only 2 people that they would accept checks from.

it really is true tho kucer, so many people dine in places like this that would NEVER work for minimum wage, yet would never vote for a higher one, and at the same time BITCH NON FUCKING STOP at any price increase ever. therefore, when they see their pancakes, bacon, eggs, and biscuits go up .25 every 30 or so years, they go off.

I think that's why they don't vote for minimum wage increases - because they don't want higher prices.

Its a myth of course. This economy has absorbed every minimum wage increase quite well. But that's a whole other topic.

I'm not really sorry to see Nichols Lunch go, but it is an institution so I'm sure it has some nostalgic value for many in the area. Wasn't it a favorite hang-out of Walt Bodine?

oh i totally agree. it is a myth. but you have to freely admit the ones who stand against most of the time are the same ones who shop, eat, etc in cheaper places keeping people making the bottom dollar. yet would not work for it themselves.

reminds me of working at worlds of fun the summer before my senior year at 'tonka. minimum wage was $3.10 and WOF paid us $2.85 because we were "seasonal" workers. i worked 80 hours a week almost every week that summer when i was 16 years old. i thought i was gettin' rich. i was making $200 a week for 80 hours work.

worked day shift at the playground and nite shift on any ride i picked and then got in 2 hours cleaning and polishing the train every nite.

i went here alot in high school and infrequently over the past 10 years, whether it was for 5 am not going home yet screw chubbys sit around breakfast or for just late night coffee hanging out.
its too bad its gone, due to its singularity and longevity, but the food was pretty bad.
once, late at night, i ordered the brains.  i thought it would be a creatively scrambled eggs dish.
no.
it was pig brains, complete with ground up bits of skull in it.
its too bad for the neighborhood, but i would never choose to go there unless i was drunk and it was 4 am.

I was thinking the other day that ironically I can still picture a breakfast place doing pretty well in that location if they just went a bit more upscale with the food and atmosphere.  I would think they could catch a lot of the plaza area commuters headed south.  Of course the area may already be saturated with first watch and Mamas not too far off the track in either direction.

I tried to go there once but I turned right around when it said cash only.  I rarely carry cash anymore and not enough to pay for two people's lunch.

sorry about being late to chime in, but i really miss nichols.  i've eaten there off and on since i was in college -- back in the days when a steak dinner could be had for about $1.15.

lately i'd eat breakfast there a couple of times a week.  really good food, in my opinion, and always quick.  and angelina -- working for $2.13 an hour plus tips -- always had a morning paper for me to read.

a lot of people were every day regulars there, and i feel sorry for them.

i feel especially sorry for the employees.  chances are they didn't get more than a few hours notice of the closing -- if that much.

c'mon, michael, have a heart.

sums it up right there.  i've never noticed the kind of horror stories about sanitation that some people are throwing out there, i never came in during late hours, just a lunch or breakfast here & there on the weekends.  maybe they (cockroaches), like many of their (nichol's) patrons, only come out at night.  most likely those situations were rare or extremely exagerated, knowing one of the posters, i'd say the latter.
