"So this basically means it will stay surface lot parking for the time being or at least until the church decides to build low-density, low rise facilities to support the parish?"

I don't know that you can safely assume that this group will do something so out of sync with the general trend of the neighborhood. They may view their ownership and redevelopment as an aspect of their ministry in the area and attempt something more.

They're putting something like $100M into their Leawood building, so this isn't a struggling church/enterprise.

Exactly. As a (lapsed) Methodist, what the Church of the Resurrection is doing is much more along the lines of a non-denominational megachurch; I'd wager that it's more likely than not that they go non-denominational at some point in the next 3 to 5 years.

Is this lot off the tax rolls now that a church owns it?

when the deal closes, it would no longer pay property tax. it would still pay the streetcar assessment, however!

The church needs additional parking for the more than 1,000 people its downtown campus at 1522 McGee St. attracts each weekend, as well as offices, classrooms and additional worship space nearby.

It also expects to build on the site in the future, maintaining the parking capacity, said Scott M. Chrostek, pastor for the downtown campus, which is part of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection based in Leawood.
Didn't the Star successfully make some horseshit argument about why they deserved more tax breaks (to bring no new development and negative new jobs to the city) based on this lot?

i think you're referring to this failed maneuver to get the parking shared with the community: http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/n ... -deal.html

the lot is a separate parcel and probably isn't the one that was abated. the article discussing the potential sale appeared about 2 months later, so they probably had been in talks already?

Got it. Doesn't realy help me swallow the Star tax break any easier, but still informative.

Down the block and around the corner, the renovation of 1732 Cherry, which is becoming a distillery, is well underway. Great to see another nice building in the 'hood reborn.
if it's the blond brick building, probably just repairs. it's pretty full of galleries already (art & bicycle clubhouse, freshcassette, gallery 504) and offices/residences upstairs.

here's the distillery: http://www.liftedspiritskc.com/

rosin preservation also opened their new office at 1712 holmes this month: https://www.facebook.com/RosinPreservat ... 1444083001

also, the "yellow building" (formerly police station #4, the failed "caliente" restaurant/club, and hemingway 103 gallery) has sold and will be renovated as a photography studio and event space.

Developers tackle another $8M Crossroads apartment project

Andrew Ganahl of Linden Street Partners LLC appeared before the Planned Industrial Expansion Authority board on Thursday to request a property tax abatement for the conversion of a former Kansas City Star paper warehouse at 1721-23 Walnut St. into 38 market-rate apartments over ground-floor commercial space.

Should be a nice addition to Walnut and the Crossroads. Like that ground floor retail is going to be included. Really hope that the surface lots on the West side of Walnut between 15th and 17th get developed at some point in the future, it would make for a great couple of blocks.
