Re: IKEA may be coming to Merriam Village
I saw that the K-Mart at Shawnee Mission Parkway and I-35 will be closing its doors toward the end of January. It appears to be about 12 acres with another 1-2 acres of undeveloped ground behind it. The land is owned by a guy out of New York. Given the size of the space (large for NE JoCo), age of the building, and proximity to the proposed IKEA, let the speculation begin as to how it might develop.

Interesting items in that article -- "One level of parking below the store, a two-level parking structure, and spaces accessible at-grade will provide more than 1,200 parking spaces on-site" and "IKEA also is evaluating potential on-site power generation to complement its current U.S. renewable energy presence at 90% of its U.S. locations."

if it's like Minneapolis it's effectively a warehouse with walls laid out to form a single snaking path through the facility.grovester wrote:Have they ever released any detailed plans of the site?

I was kind of curious of the access points and layout geographically speaking. Are they tearing down the great wall of Merriam?

Re: IKEA may be coming to Merriam Village
I live in Merriam and recently got a permit for some work. After striking up a conversation the guy pulled out the prints and showed me. The wall is going to stay and the parking will be underground. The store will sit on top of the lot and I believe an additional lot will sit south of the building. None of the land directly east of the site (west of Slater) is being used by IKEA. They didn't even purchase it. I was surprised to hear that. That space will be available for additional retail.
I live a couple blocks from the site and will be in and out of the city offices while we work on our addition. I'll update with anything interesting.

I guess I don't get what you're saying by "should". Like it's not going to succeed at this location?GRID wrote:This should be at the old Bannister Mall location.
From all accounts, they considered Bannister - why would that have been a better decision for Ikea?
