At least UMKC has options. UMSL would have to get creative to rename itself, with SLU being pretty well established nationally. Perhaps they could look to the Famous Missourians Hall of Fame for inspiration.

That is only 38 spots below K-State which ranks 143.

The question is with a medical school, law school, dental school, solid business school, good arts program, should the ranking be higher?

With a little better marketing maybe the University of Kansas City could catch the lowest ranked Big 12 school, West Virgina, at 164.

http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrevie ... ata/page+8

Clicking on UMKC on the list provides some more information including the following:

"The university developed the unique team name in the 1930s, when community excitement about the Kansas City Zoo’s purchase of two baby kangaroos grew, and when Walt Disney himself drew a cartoon of the Kasey Kangaroo mascot. Although he never graduated, former President Harry Truman attended the UMKC law school for two years and later received the school’s first honorary degree. Today, he is the namesake of the university’s Harry S Truman Center for Governmental Affairs."

I didn't know Truman attended the Law School and I didn't know the history of the mascot name or that Walt Disney did the first drawings over 80 years ago. The Star apparently does a pretty lame job of covering UMKC history. Maybe if they take University of Missouri out of the name, the Star's coverage of the University will be more favorable.
I think Truman attended the Kansas City School of Law, which originally was downtown at 1019 Grand when Truman was enrolled, then called the City Club Building. That building was first called the old Shukert Building (prior to 1903) and Missouri Building (sometime between 1903-1910). A new Shukert Building was built down the block south of the present-day Professional Building in 1903, and I think the building name was then changed to the Missouri Building until the City Club took it over.

The law school appears to have moved (around 1928) to a building at 913 Baltimore north of our present central public library, and later became part of the University of Kansas City (later UMKC) in 1938. The Baltimore Avenue building is now administrative offices for the public library. It was the Advertising Club building in the 1980s.

While Truman attended classes at KC School of Law, he never graduated.

KU Med may be for sale right? How sweet would that be.

And folks like that probably already think that KC is in KS; UMKC isn't likely to even register on their radar for them to acknowledge the "M" part.

UMKC begins $21.5 million science lab renovation: http://www.kansascity.com/news/business ... 92652.html
Renovation will be aided by state legislation that includes $18.3 million for UMKC’s Spencer Chemistry Building and Biological Sciences Building. The money comes from about $160 million in bond funds for use on college and university projects around the state.

I found these images of the $32 million Flarsheim Hall expansion project on the PGAV Architects website.
This will be on the SW corner of 51st and Rockhill Rd.
This was announced in December and it looks like they have all of their financing. I haven't been near there and am not sure if they have broken ground yet.

All students are being moved out of Oak Place Apartments by the end of the month because they found more damage (not sure if it’s from new plumbing issues or the earlier ones). They also found mold. The apartments won’t be open for the Fall semester either.

Those apartments are less than a decade old and they found issues in a separate wing as the original plumbing issues and expect to find more in the other wings, so I’m betting it’s shoddy construction.

I don’t know what they go for now but when they were built it cost $700/person per month for a shared apartment. Really sucks for the students.

Well, they replaced the Twin Oaks which were reputed to be in a horrible state of disrepair in 2008. Apparently, the Twin Oaks was quite the place to be in KC during the 50's. Unfortunately, their replacement seems to be suffering the same fate much sooner in their life - albeit, they were built to be essentially dorms.

'Reckless' work by JE Dunn, Gould Evans forced UMKC students from housing, suit says
University of Missouri curators are suing Gould Evans Associates, JE Dunn Construction and other companies claiming they were "reckless" in the way they designed and constructed housing for University of Missouri-Kansas City students.

The 70-page lawsuit alleges that 34 companies committed "gross negligence" in the development of the Oak Place Apartments, at 5050 Oak St. in Kansas City. The lawsuit accuses the companies of ignoring problems that led to leaking, pipe failures, mold issues, sagging floors and other problems.

UMKC got $$ from this. A replacement dorm is being studied as a part of their new campus master plan

Kevin Collison is reporting that UMKC's new master plan calls for transit-oriented housing for 500 students to replace the recently-demolished Oak Street residence halls. No set time for development has been planned. Retail space and recreation fields are also part of the plan.

I believe this rendering is just a placeholder.

The UMKC master plan also includes some interesting future development at the Hospital Hill campus extending east to Troost. The plan includes a new health sciences building at 25rd and Holmes, an addition to the UMKC dental school, and the medical school buildings. The long-term plan is to add office and research building along 25th street, and additional housing, extending to Troost.

I wouldn’t even call it a rendering. More like a “precedent project” of how theirs could end up.
