Thanks for the depressing photo's! I asked for them and I got them... That and the TWA building are the only buildings I'll miss in the bussiness district.

It is a shame this building is being torn down. What is planned for that site?

Boy, it's been awhile since that "Dock Co." sign has seen the light of day.

Looks like it was a sturdy building. I guess builders shouldn't bother too much with making buildings last a long time, since they will be demolished in 50 years.

I noticed driving by there the other day that there is an old painted sign on the side of the old building next door (the former Catacombs Haunted House) that advertised fez hats like they wear in Morocco. I thought that was strange. Was there ever a big demand for the fez in Kansas City? I can't imagine anyone buying them except for the Moila Shriners.
Now there's a hat that could make a comeback. Perhaps our little architecture club could start wearing them at our meetings.

Pretty sad, all we can do is hope something big goes in its place.

isn't it established that the law bldg will be a parking lot? is there any plan whatsoever for future development?GRID wrote:Pretty sad, all we can do is hope something big goes in its place.

that is the big unknown. Most find it hard to believe all of this is being torn down for a surface lot.chrizow wrote:isn't it established that the law bldg will be a parking lot? is there any plan whatsoever for future development?GRID wrote:Pretty sad, all we can do is hope something big goes in its place.

Some of us were observing that the workers are going to a lot of effort to remove the Law Bldg's portion of the party wall between it and the building to the south. Seems like if there were any plans to tear the next building down anytime soon, they would just leave it there for now and knock it down when they start tearing down the next building.
I wonder if they intend to board up the missing windows that were exposed on the north side of the building or just let the rain and pigeons continue to pass thru.

It's probably a safety measure to prevent the remaining brick party wall of the Law Building from toppling over once the parcel is cleared and the ground starts getting wet. Depending on drainage, water could accumulate next to any remaining wall from the Law Building.
The two buildings next door, 1209-11 Grand, will be torn down. They are owned by the TIF Commission, and there has already been a pre-demolition inspection done on those two buildings. I doubt they'll bother to board up those windows.
I'm guessing that the TIF Commission and the City will buy up the remaining buildings to the south --I think there are four, and demolish them all at one time. All are vacant except for the wig business. The entire stretch of buildings is in a redevelopment district.

A shot of 12th & Grand minus the Law Building. I suppose the rest of those buildings to the south are next.

Look at that old advertisement for the Pantages Theater. I guess that's what it is. It's apparently for some show on a Friday in July in ~1930 or before.
Here's some photos of the old theater:
http://home.kc.rr.com/marxbrotherskc/theatre.htm
It was on the south side of 12th Street, just west of Mcgee, or just east of where the Law Building once stood. It's too bad this beautiful structure wasn't preserved.
Someone needs to document these ads in detail before the next building is leveled.

Ha! There's a painted ad on the side of the former Catacombs Haunted House building that advertises 10 cent cigars.
I wish they would have at least kept the tower of the Pantages Theater. It would have made a great entrance to a new building.

Long, thanks for the close-ups.
Whoa. Is that a paper ad pasted on there?

I love the internet.
After a little digging online, it turns out that on June 14, 1929 (Friday falls on the 14th that year), Amos and Andy performed at the Pantages. Sure enough, those are the names on the poster.
And here is a link with a picture of a KC welcoming of the stars:
