I like it but I immediately thought of every single bridge that's been designed in the last 5 years.

Guys, cost is a big big BIG issue here.  250 million to reconstruct several miles of urban interstate and cross a major river.  I think we are getting a signature bridge, nobody said it would be not be similar to another structure, the city just didn't want another heart of america girder bridge.

We just don't have the money to build light rail, hov etc, especially when it's not justified along this route.  I would much rather see a new "signature" LRT bridge myself built anyway because that bridge will be in a better location to carry bikes and peds.

Why is this only receiving 20% of funds from the Federal government?  I've seen other projects get massive amounts of help.

That Boston bridge is featured on the ABC TV show, "Boston  Legal" a lot.  Didn't a Kansas City firm design the Boston bridge?  Who's designing the Bond bridge?

An article said two of the original architects (or engineers?) of the Paseo Bridge will help with this one.

Good point. The $250 million is not just for the bridge, it includes three miles of rebuilt and expanded Interstate highway.  So the budget is actually quite low for the scope of the project. That's one reason MoDOT had a hard time getting companies to bid on it.

I am pretty impressed by the outcome of this design/build concept.  We are getting an aesthetically interesting bridge, with state of the art interchanges, and integrated bike/ped access.  At the start of the process, who would have thought that all of that would survive cost cutting to keep it under the limited budget.  Perhaps we should have put the Chastain project out to design/build.

There is a bridge in Boston that the New bridge will look EXACTLY like.  Actually it will look like exactly half of the Boston bridge.

I think this will look really good when complete. The only thing I wish they could have made possible, was to have a clear span of the river.

So do they build the new bridge right next to the old one, and then slightly realign the freeway to connect to it when complete and then tear down the old one?

So did anyone else notice the influence a certain sports figure had on our new bridge design??

Could the Paseo Bridge be used for something else?  Seems a shame to tear it down.  Could they make it a pedestrian and biking crossing, and unique landscaped park.  I guess the cost to maintain it would be prohibitive though.

Stretch should take the steel and form a 500 foot tall bong.  it could be our space needle.

When the HoA bridge went up there was a proposal to turn the former road span into a glass enclosed restaurant.  St Louis saved its old Chain of Rocks bridge and turned it into a ped/bike span.

Many cities have kept old bridges and reused them as bike-ped connectors, though I'm not sure I've ever seen a bridge design such the Paseo used.  They're usually smaller and older, it seems, generally old rail bridges.
Regarding Cincy, I'm not sure if it's known as the 'purple people bridge', but the Roebling bridge across the Ohio is a beautiful structure, and still quite functional...a fair number of people seem to make the walk across the river before and after Reds (and probably Bengals) games.  Ah, downtown baseball...

I have to say I'm pretty impressed with what we're getting for the price tag.  Bridges can be astronomically expensive, and this Paseo bridge design, while certainly not unique, is nonetheless pretty slick considering the design/build process and all of the interstate work that goes along with it.  If only all major civic projects incorporated such pleasing design details.
