It has nothing to do with FOX news.  It's just part of growing old.  My folks don't watch FOX news at all and they are more than a little paranoid about things.  It's been a phenomena that has been going on long before the days of biased news broadcasts or even TV.  Hopefully, you'll be around to experience the same in another 40 years or so.

Kansas City is the 7th most miserable Sports City.  Kind of a idiotic piece of writing though.  The writer chides KC for their most memorable post season moment being losing to Yankees in successive playoff appearances without mentioning a sweep of the Yankees in 1980 and a World Series Championship in 1985.  At least Houston is more miserable according to the writer.

I am posting the original article (Kotkin) and full list that was alluded to on the previous page.  Rather interesting article, all things considered, and continues to further my thesis that KC is becoming a poor man's MSP/Denver/Austin.  If nothing else, the trends here are pointing up, and we are starting to be solidly considered a "New Economy" metro.

As mentioned, growth numbers are % of pop.

Looks like JoCo and maybe Douglas county have low rates of diabetes.  Article suggests correlation to education levels and diabetes.

The map also suggests education is an issue.  Note that some counties with high native American populations seem also to be affected.

Native Americans have had high rates of diabetes and alcoholism for a long time. Part of the reason for that is their metabolism is a bit different, in that they don't process sugar and starch as well as Caucasians.

There are other examples of cultural differences in metabolism. Asians have higher rates of lactose intolerance.  African Americans have higher rates of high blood pressure.

I'm a nerd....it's official, spending Friday night reading a US Highway System Road report by state...Hmmm

http://reason.org/files/19th_annual_highway_report.pdf

I found it very interesting.

Kansas ranked #3 best road system
MO ranked #8 best road system, improved 16 spots since 2004!

ND spends $4017 per mile to maintain system (lowest) MO = $14,762 (12) KS = $15,610 (16)
NJ spends $123,844 per mile!!! (all those cemented bodies) (highest)

KY spends $1,123 per mile for admin costs (lowest) MO = $2,099 (4) KS = $6,595 (17)
CA spends $93,464 (highest)

your link is wrong...
http://www.bizjournals.com/mobile/kansa ... ocial.html

wouldn't surprise me if true though.  those services are all about ego, which KCians maybe don't embrace, reward or respond to as much as other cities.

a lot of people at work are into LinkedIn...  just can't imagine publicly posting personal info like that.  not wise methinks, even just posting your real name.

Maybe the only reason we aren't last on that list is because we no longer have any sort of expectations for the Royals being competitive.

I was confused by the concept initially, but the rankings have little, if anything, to do with baseball.  The ranking is of MLB cities without a recent World Series title, but the evaluated metrics include things that would indicate depression in any city.  So, essentially, this is a list of select major cities and how they rank in terms of how common/severe depression is.  New York and Chicago were still listed even though the Yanks and White Sox have recent championships (due to the Mets and Cubs).

What a dumb ranking to have then.  Why not just give us a top 25 most depressed cities list?  Nobody cares if the city has an MLB team.

KC metro not as segrated as you might think.  Ranked 39th.

I've always found NYC to be more segregated than most think.  This list agrees.

Here's a list of metro % with less than 9th grade education, of those over 25 years old.

Lawrence ranked 3rd best, with only 2.25% of population.  KC metro also ranked very well, 3rd best for metros over 2M, with about 3.82%, up there with Seattle and Minneapolis.  STL was in middle, with 5.69%.

The determining factor is more or less the historical existence of a black middle class -- and the largely self-sufficient enclaves such wealth enabled -- created by high proportions of manufacturing jobs.

KC, because of its historically smaller, more agrarian (and frankly more egalitarian) culture simple never developed the critical mass of black population to sustain culturally seperate populations post-desegregation.
