I don't think there's enough room for a wrecking ball without shutting down a street - that's the problem. So, they'll be hacking at it with pickaxes for the next couple of years.GRID wrote:Are all the wrecking balls tied up or something?

Well, I'm missing the density of the south side of downtown and some of the historic structures, but I have to admit, it's nice to see buildings with windows and lights as I drive by the South Loop everyday.

Some news from tomorrow's business journal:
the EDC is looking to condemn the rest of this block, they already have control of most of it the article says. They are giving it to CWB in exchange for land they lost in the P&L district.
CWB plans, according to the article, are to knock down the buildings on the block and replace their parking....businesses lost would be Gigi's wigs and some one hour photo.
So we have CWB getting approx 2/3's of this block and a NYC developer buying the rest. Something tells me that more than them just replacing their parking is going on here.

The building right next to Law is a piece of crap-- it will probably fall down on its own after Law is removed. The Law Building was the only thing on that block that had any potential, so especially with it gone I hope to see the whole block cleared. Honestly, a surface lot would be better than the crap that is there.KCPowercat wrote:

In the meantime, I seriously would not drive on 12th street north of the building or in the northbound lanes on Grand, or walk on those sidewalks, especially outside M-F 8-5 where they seem to be even less careful.

I was in deep reflection on my bike ride tonight, so I spent an additional hour downtown after 40 miles. At 11 PM, there were still one or two workers at the Law Building. Looks like the building is being stubborn -- they were doing some sort of welding (or I'd assume some sort of anti-welding) at the back.

Perhaps a CWB garage with an office building on top?KCPowercat wrote:Some news from tomorrow's business journal:

A few pix from today. I guess the red building on the right is doomed now too.

Ouch, check out 1201 Walnut's parking garage below that, rain has really damaged the rooftop parking area. You can tell it has already begun to sink in... Or is that part of the design to let water flow down?

That's part of the design. Also you're looking at a portion that is a ramp.

Don't worry about that Devin. Part of it is illusion but there is a bit of design to it. Concrete does not sag unless it is built in or unless the foundation is sinking. I doubt the foundation is sinking.

Yeah that is an illusion created by the sloping ramp, the angled parking spaces and the dirty surface.

As reported here by Kid A:

This building is being knocked down and only a surface parking lot will replace it.....trying to follow up with other people for more information.

Probably a smart investment.. buy the location, have the city tear it down, make money as a parking lot until future development. Then decide what would be the best to put in there. Time will tell what the most demand will be for that location. IMO (sorry if this isn't what people want to hear)

actually the previous owner is tearing it down, not the city.
