Re: Sporting Kansas City
The location of the stadium alone make Sporting KC feel very minor league. Kauffman is a major league stadium surrounded by parking lots, but it still has a major league feel as a legacy MLB stadium. If it were a 25k seat stadium next to bass pro shops in Independence, it would feel the same way Sporting KC does. Which is exactly what the Royals will end up feeling like if they end up in Overland Park.
All the new MLS stadiums are in pretty neat locations. Sporting needs to move for them to be taken seriously IMO.

Texas Rangers stadium is surrounded by Walmart and other strip mall businesses. It doesn't feel minor league but maybe having cowboys stadium next to it is different

Winning and getting back the culture of winning will improve attendance. If they can’t improve the franchise stadium downtown won’t help

Re: Sporting Kansas City
Attendance is down because the team is god awful.
They sold out pretty much every game for a decade and a huge chunk of fans hop on 435 and head North. A stadium Downtown wouldn't help anything. In addition, attendance numbers for SKC always increase when school is out, due to the fanbase demographics.
There are 22 soccer specific MLS stadium. Only 4 or 5 are downtown.

Yeah, we know, but if it were downtown the baseline attendance would be higher than this.Imarealperson wrote: ↑Wed Apr 09, 2025 10:44 am Attendance is down because the team is god awful.

KC Current is sold out every match and expanding their stadium. With a bigger stadium, they would likely pass SKC attendance. It's pretty obvious that people want to experience sports downtown.

MLS Won't Change to Fall-to-Spring Schedule Until At Least 2027 After Next World Cup
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/251 ... -world-cup
MLS is looking to change the months of their season from the current February to October to the standard months for the rest of the world which is typically August to May. This would require more bad weather match play in December and January and could require teams to build more dome stadiums in places like Kansas City that have very cold weather. This could be the impetus that we need to push for a downtown SKC stadium that could also be used for other events. Because the size of crowds is smaller than the NFL, you could have a stadium better suited for NCAA Final Four games or smaller concerts.

Re: Sporting Kansas City
If calendar flip happens, it'll almost certainly include a six-week winter break from mid-December to late January. With the MLS Cup playoffs currently ending in early December and the season proper starting in late February, this wouldn't be *that* drastic of a switch.

Agree with that this could be a reason for a new stadium, maybe not with a full roof but something. It would be interesting too because many cities much colder than KC would instantly have a problem not having heated fields, etc. Could spark a change in the MLS.beautyfromashes wrote: ↑Thu Apr 10, 2025 11:11 pm MLS Won't Change to Fall-to-Spring Schedule Until At Least 2027 After Next World Cup

This would be great for KC too in general because there needs to be more than just the Chiefs in the winter time. I'd prob follow it more if it was in winter, not much else going on. But summer? Nah.

Can’t you just play a heavier away game schedule early in the year Ala MLb?

https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/A ... nge-today/Critics, however, believe the impact on teams in cold-weather markets such as Minnesota, Chicago, Toronto and Montreal would be too deleterious. Many believe those teams would see attendance decline significantly by swapping mid-summer matches for games in December and February. A schedule change could also force northern teams to make additional investments in infrastructure like heated playing surfaces and indoor training fields.
