So Sherman says the Royals have a location "buttoned up"?
An announcement will probably come by opening day or shortly after (depending on how the start to the season goes). Full quote from Sherman...
"There's nothing really more that I can say than what we talked about at Royals Rally, but I think this is going to be very exciting for economic development and it's also about securing the longterm home for the Royals and we're working hard. We got a deal that's buttoned up and we're ready to talk about... we're looking forward to being able to get there".
Q was on kcur yesterday (not positive it was live) and didn't sound super confident in any location but said downtown was much more likely to him than sprint campus. something like that

Interesting. I can't see it going to the Sprint campus because I can't see Johnson County wanting visitors pouring in.
I thought Legends might be a possibility, but that doesn't make much sense if you want an urban experience and I think Kansas has a budget shortfall.
I wonder if they revived North Kansas City, although Washington Square Park makes the most sense; they need the streetcar. How would they handle stadium proximity to hospitals?
I would have been excited about the East Village. It feels like this piece of downtown is losing momentum and isn't going to get it back anytime soon.
"A deal that's buttoned-up" does not sounds good for WSP or downtown in general, given the moving parts involved there. Worried a KS announcement is incoming...
Watch this be end up being a site that's completely unexpected.
Conspiracy time: Why build a parking garage, hotel, new apartment building, and expanded Negro Leagues Museum at 18th and Paseo if not to get in ahead of a larger ballpark district near 18th and Vine?
Any site needs to be "buttoned up" before they can move forward with it, even if it's a DT site, so I don't see much point in trying to read any particular site into Sherman's statement. True that KS is likely the path of least resistance, but we already knew that.

Not sure it is. The community aspect alone is a ton of resistance over there.
Not even living in KC now and I am still extremely nervous about what the final decision is. This will be a true definining moment. I'll either be popping champagne or probably crying like a wuss.

That is what I thought when I heard the phrase "buttoned up". Depends on the meaning of "buttoned up", but to me that means the obstacles have been removed and the way forward is clear including not needing a vote for financing which would make it tough for a downtown site. Maybe the state is kicking in a significant amount of $$ to make this happen but anything requiring a vote is not "buttoned up".

So Sherman says the Royals have a location "buttoned up"?
FWIW, Sam Mellinger took to Twitter today saying that Sherman actually said the Royals will bring the plan forward "When we have a deal buttoned-up", not "We have a deal that's buttoned-up".

KCDowntown
Thanks for the clarity. That's a significant difference.

Everything I’ve been hearing sounds like WSP or some other DT/DT-adjacent site is the move. I wouldn’t be too stressed…yet

That would be the best possible outcome, especially if it cut the County out of the deal entirely.
