I've been looking for an image of the Virginia Tavern for a long time, and also have had no success.

This is happening right now on the blocks bounded by Southwest Trafficway and Pennsylvania and 34th and 35th streets in the Valentine neighborhood. Kansas City Life Insurance has currently demolished any remaining structures. They have cleared other blocks in the past. An entire neighborhood has been demolished with no stated development plan by KCLI.

These are houses and apartment buildings in a highly convenient and desirable part of the City. Had KCLI just put the structures up for sale, they would have likely been purchased and renovated years ago. New infill structures would probably have already been constructed.

I posted the Paseo West photos as a lesson that this can happen to other neighborhoods, and as an example that the process can suck vitality out of parts of the City.

The Roma Bakery at 1301 Independence Avenue. It was owned by a member of the Civella crime syndicate.

The apartment building at 1110 Tracy Avenue. The images are a 1940 tax photo and a 2015 Google Streetview before demolition. People were still living in the building in 2007.

The Dante's Inferno jazz-era nightclub was at 1104 Independence Avenue (east of the north side of Troost--Troost had a jog here and didn't have through alignment).

The club was owned by crime boss Joe Lusco. The site was originally located on nearby Cherry Street but moved to Independence Avenue in 1933 after outgrowing its original location. The building was demolished by the time the 1940 tax photos were taken.

There was another Dante's Inferno nightclub on the northwest corner at E. 41st Street and Troost in Hyde Park. Part of its sign remains in the window at Retro Inferno at Truman and Grand.

Thanks for the photo's Fang. I love looking at photos from this area as much of my ancestry lived in the NE part of the city and especially Columbus Park. Dante's looks like an interesting place. It's former location is on the KC Rainbow Tour: https://voicemap.me/tour/kansas-city/kc ... -s-inferno

The Paseo Tap Room was on the north side of E. 12th Street (1416 E. 12th Street--between Lydia and The Paseo). That was a neat building.

Joe Jammer and Herman Walder at Paseo Tap Room. Walder played the alto sax & clarinet and performed with many noted bands and performers of the day.

If the West Bottoms can be redeveloped into multi-family housing, there is no reason this neighborhood cannot. One advantage is that no loud trains are moving through the neighborhood. Properties are not in danger of a levee break or pumps failing.

Do more of this.

Black Hawk Barbeque and Buffet, 1410 E. 14th Street (between Lydia and Paseo), was on the north side of the street.

The building in the distance with the second Coca-Cola sign on the side is still there. It's the offices of Wier Medical Transportation.

This is the southwest corner of E. 13th and Tracy Avenue. The house on the corner is 1302 Tracy Avenue and the apartment duplex to the right is 1213-15 E. 13th Street.
