As directly as I can through my work I have done my best to voice that opinion as has our entire department....we still have some folks in power (elected by Piper, Bonner, and Edwardsville..) that are convinced we need to keep the regressive destructive policies that have continued to fail KCK.kcjak wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 11:02 amI hope you let your elected officials know of your viewpoints - it may not do any good but I've lived in a family that for generations has complained about a LOT, yet never even voiced their displeasure to the people would could make a difference. Unless elected officials know their stance is unpopular then nothing will ever change.SilentSpades24 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2023 8:08 pm Unified Government Board of Commissioners very opposed to this project. It has been held over one month for further discussion. Commissioners actually are out here exclaiming that we need more office space and this needs to be preserved as office space only. They don't even want to entertain a mixed-use office park.
As a young person trying to make this county better and bring great development to this county, trying to do the best we can and lay a framework to revive this county, this bs is so discouraging in every single way possible. Absolutely awful. Sorry for the rant but this attitude absolutely dejects me and burns me up.

I guess people in KCK government don't realize that there is like zero chance those buildings are leased as office space. Especially at class A rates.
Terrible location for office space.

CHANGE OF ZONE APPROVED 6 IN FAVOR AND 3 OPPOSED. Kane, Stites, Davis opposed. This is in Stites own district and right adjacent to Kane's district.
This project will move forward with a Final Development Plan, Final Replatt, and a Development Agreement.
224-232 apartment units in the north tower with ground floor retail. South tower will remain office. Parking lot to be redeveloped. Plans brought forward in the future for the lot redevelopment. Open space/conservation parcel will be platted and dedicated as an easement.

Not sure what happened to the apartment plan, but a friend at Farmers tells me they're moving from their office on Ridgeview in Olathe to the Cerner West campus in February. They won't occupy the whole building, just a couple of floors, but they are excited for the move to a much newer building with nicer facilities than what they have currently.

Pretty sure I recall that only one of the budlings was to become apartments while the other remained office. That will be a very expensive conversion though and they won't get the rents way out there to justify it, even if KCK throws star bond money at it.Sani wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 9:43 am Not sure what happened to the apartment plan, but a friend at Farmers tells me they're moving from their office on Ridgeview in Olathe to the Cerner West campus in February. So I would bet it will sit vacant for many years and eventually get leased as office space again because KCK will practically lease it out for less than class C space in KCMO. The buildings were built with star bonds, may as well subsidize the lease too.

Farmers Insurance leasing 144,000 square feet in floors six through nine in one of the towers. They are moving from Olathe.

Re: Cerner West Campus, Village West
I really feel that a new class A building or two as part of the EV/EC stadium development would have brought some office traffic out of the suburbs and back Downtown, but alas that is looking like a lost opportunity right now.
Also for all the shiney office buildings that have went up in JoCo around College Blvd, i-435, US-69 a lot of the initial suburban office stock in places like northern JoCo around Shawnee Mission Parkway, 67th St and then into South KC, Wyandotte County and up towards the airport now looks very dated . It would be great if some of these tired developments were demolished and it allowed tenants to consolidate Downtown but I would imagine they would just head the opposite way if anything.

There is a difference between looking "dated" and being outdated or not functional. Because the outside design it not in the current style does not mean something needs to be wantonly demolished. We celebrate buildings a century old, but despise those half a century old?

Re: Cerner West Campus, Village West
Once a building is constructed, for conservation reasons, we should strive to keep it maintained. It should not be torn down as a disposable object. It isn't just because of climate change, look at the recent landfill proposal in south Kansas City that was stopped. Demolition of buildings and new construction waste make up a significant portion of landfills. People don't seem to connect the two.
