We're doing insane post-mortems and freakouts over one delusional radio guy all for it to end up somewhere else anwyay.BrisbaneKC wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 9:11 pm Missouri has themselves as much to blame in my view. If there was a strong core in KCMO they wouldn't be losing near as much to Kansas even with all the free money I mean state bonds. The Missouri side also has so many clusters of sprawl outside the Downtown/Plaza area when it comes to offices and attractions like Ward Parkway, Executive Hills, the stadium locations, Bannister, around the airport, I 470/70 interchange, and now there is a lot of JoCo type development in Lee’s Summit and Liberty, it's all the same suburban garbage. The vote was shot down to pieces. The region just doesn't care about anything urban. I’m with the majority here, for those of us wanting urban living KC is sadly the wrong place.
Kansas City, the world's biggest parking lot.

At it's peak Sprint Hdqrs had about 18,000 max. I worked there and at other locations. That place was the worst place I've ever worked before. Shortly after I worked at the new ATT Pavilion when PnL was being built and parking and walking through the construction zone was a better deal than at the Sprint penitentiary.
I've been a Royals fan since the 70s. I would become completely disinterested in them if they moved to kansas. If they do move I hope they will change their name to "kansas wizards" or "kansas totos." Take the name KC and Royals completely out so KCMO can keep their legacy. That way I can keep my Royals gear and still wear it proudly. If they move to kansas and keep the name I would not wear any Royals gear. I would also gladly start buying Monarch and/or Cards gear, I look better in red and I like the Cards.
Honestly, I would prefer they move to Nashville or someplace else then kansas.

Moving to old Sprint/T-Mobile campus site would be a terrible idea. This also assumes the owner of the campus would be willing to sell it, probably in excess of $200M, then the cost to tear all those buildings down would be astronomical. And just the waste of resources that end up in a landfill. The campus itself is nice, and the buildings are what, 20+ years old? I worked on the campus when it first opened from 2000-2006. I know that's been over 20 years, but the buildings weren't built cheap, meaning they are all brick and stone. I just don't see it happening there, much prefer the WSP area or even the East Village if that is even on the table.

The purchase price alone will be a huge hurdle to that site working, as well as onerous demolition costs, for a questionable return on investment. Yeah sure, star bonds and gambling revenue help, but only so much.
Long term viability is going to remain lower in the burbs, it achieves none of the stated goals of the ownership sans keeping the team in the region, and actively ostracizes a huge portion of the fan base that has been rather vocal about their disdain for the “border war” politics and their reluctance to follow the team over state lines.
Do I think that all those factors mean it’s a completely unworkable site? Not in the slightest.
We have to recognize it for what it is though, a piece of leverage to achieve what the team ownership ACTUALLY wants.
I have a significant level of hope about this, sure, but I’m willing to bet that cooler head prevail, and the only way a JOCO site happens is if every door is closed on Downtown by either elected officials or massive public pressure and backlash. Neither seem too likely an impediment IMO.

No Uhauls or hair salons will be harmed by this move.
Plus, the Crossroads HOA NIMBYs get to continue their subsidized rent and get to cosplay being in a cosmopolitan city.
OAK STAYS OPEN!!!
I don’t see the problem here.

As the American Royal is in Kansas now, this makes complete sense. MO had 50 years to make the area around TSC more palatable. Plus, all the tears shed on here about a stadium moving 15 miles should make the fountains self sustainable.

Not saying this would be a deal breaker but here is a company who appears to be growing in the Aspiria campus

"Healthcare IT Leaders gained USA Health as a client, work that will be managed by its Overland Park operation, which in September set up shop at the Aspiria campus."

Re: Downtown Baseball Stadium
That Meridian site on Antioch/435 is basically shovel ready with nowhere near the same complexities. I think the state has tried to push them to the Sprint campus because of the surrounding star bond developments but ultimately if it comes down to it they are not going to play hard ball and will bend over to give the Royals as much free cash and land choice as they want. The scarier thing is beyond the actual stadium that Meridian development as of now has plans for 1.8m sq feet of office space and 250k of retail. Even if the office space was halved say to accommodate the stadium that's still huge. There would more poaching going on than just a baseball team on that site IMO. JoCo is still firing up big retail developments like the Hunt Olathe thing, Bluhawk, Lenexa City Center etc on top of the newer stuff like Prairiefire and the usual strip malls and pad sites. Ironically a ton have been added to 119th and Nall in the past year. City Place on College Blvd/69 highway also got incentives not too long ago to complete their build out.
I read recently that Metro KC has almost double the leasable office space of the Milwaukee market despite being not much bigger population wise and having nowhere near the fortune 500 presence. Maybe bulldozing the Sprint campus can consolidate things a bit.

The overlooked point in all this is that southern JoCo would actually be a phenomenal place to put Chiefs stadium but for some reason we’re only allowed to have the Royals go there or something.

I can't think of an open site we could use that would help with convention business and still work for a 70k seat stadium.langosta wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 12:28 pmPretty horrible for the KCMO convention center and big events business.TheUrbanRoo wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 11:53 am The overlooked point in all this is that southern JoCo would actually be a phenomenal place to put Chiefs stadium but for some reason we’re only allowed to have the Royals go there or something.

Obviously not ideal with the RR there and access in and out...

But that's if the site is going downtown. They're not. So if it's going to be a non-downtown site then either NKC or OP is the best. A few big events a year is peanuts compared to the image change it would give going from the current shithole to southern JoCo.langosta wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 12:28 pmPretty horrible for the KCMO convention center and big events business.TheUrbanRoo wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 11:53 am The overlooked point in all this is that southern JoCo would actually be a phenomenal place to put Chiefs stadium but for some reason we’re only allowed to have the Royals go there or something.

KS wants to build up their convention center and hotels. WYCO wants their own too. This and Royals going to KS will greatly further those efforts. As grid mentions, where the stadiums are now has fans, teams, support staff staying downtown.TheUrbanRoo wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 1:52 pmBut that's if the site is going downtown. They're not. Amazing how for this we could just easily compromise and solve this by putting it in NKC, downtown or even JoCo but no it must either continue to be in the worst suburb in KC or the most isolated one (WyCo)langosta wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 2:05 pmKS wants to build up their convention center and hotels.
