"Johnson expects the first data center clients to have space in the building in early 2025. The next phase of the project, building out a tech hub or other public-facing uses, could come by the end of 2025 or early 2026."

"Johnson says he had been working on a deal for the former KC Star building for three years, long before conversations for a Crossroads Royals stadium that would have demolished the building.

“I’m a big baseball fan and I think a baseball stadium could be awesome for Kansas City but I was waiting,” said Johnson. “I was waiting for the vote and I was really surprised that it failed and as soon as it failed, I got the call saying our deal was good to go.”"

I hope they actually get to phase 2 at some point. A data center alone at that sizeable location is a little underwhelming and low activity for the area. I'll always see it as another lost opportunity for KC (especially if the Royals end up in Johnson County rather than Washington Square Park).

Great to hear! Activating the street level will be a challenge, especially along Oak, but eager to see them try.

Troy Schulte, former KCMO City Manager, leaving his role as Jackson County Administrator to join SomeraRoad and build SR Sports & Entertainment, a division focused on “strategic investment and development of sports entertainment districts and venues across the U.S.”

Say what you will about Schulte but he sure has a knack of finding a new job just before he’s going to get fired.

It's December and the Royals are still so quiet. I mean they have barely said a word since the tax failed.

Why should they? Others are doing the hard work for them.

They're doing the work, just behind the scenes and keeping things quiet. Just like they should have before instead of involving the public too soon and too much.

The multiple town halls, multiple location options and open book into the process wasn't enough for you? Get a job with the Royals if you want some say. "but my tax dollars" doesn't mean everyone knows what's best and needs to know everything. Come up with a rock solid plan behind the scenes. Get all ducks in a row, every detail, including how to push back on potential concerns and at that point and that point only, you take it to the public for feedback and input. They involved the public far too soon into the process which just made it all sloppy AF. They didn't talk to the right people until it was too late, including important ones like..........the fucking mayor!

i was joking but it was funny to say public involvement as "too soon" and "too often" when they literally out of left field announced a new site that wasn't on their finalist list that they were very public about right before the vote.

We all acknowledge what they did do publically was horribly done and I agree with you they need to get their ducks in a row first. There wanting to involve the public was admirable but poorly done from start to finish.

As the Royals weigh where to build a new stadium, in Downtown or elsewhere, the team has taken part in at least one meeting — and potentially more — with VanTrust Real Estate LLC about a Washington Square Park ballpark project since the week of Nov. 18...
VanTrust's support would be crucial for Washington Square Park to work as a ballpark site. That's because the developer holds access easement rights that run through part of the prospective stadium footprint...
More recently, utility locate requests have appeared to show someone studying Washington Square Park and Blue KC's property for a potential development. McClure Engineering in October submitted six such requests around the area on behalf of an unidentified client. Two requests were "preliminary design" tickets. The Missouri 811 system says these are to be requested so parties can determine "what facilities are present when planning a project."
The current list includes, at least, Washington Square Park and Aspiria, the former Sprint campus in Overland Park.
Sounds like due diligence meetings and utility/survey fact finding.

Right now fells like someone is throwing you a surprise birthday party and don’t want to be the one to ruin it. People I know not saying anything but have mysterious looks in their eyes and mischievous grins. Something’s happening!

How well connected are those people? Should we be getting our hopes up or tempering expectations from your perspective?
