i totally felt it....and the previous one on Thursday(?). I used to live in California and once you've experienced a quake you always know that feeling. I was lying in bed thinking "that was an earthquake", but wasn't sure until i checked the news.

I felt it in St. Louis but I wasn't sure it was an earthquake until it came up on the USGS website and people on my facebook newsfeed started mentioning it. I heard the trees rustle outside and then immediately felt my sofa begin to rock back and forth, but it was really gentle. Immediately thought earthquake, couldn't think of what else it could possibly be, but it was so gentle that I wasn't really certain until I got confirmation.

I'm beginning to think that people are making it up that they can feel them in KC. I was in a room full of people and nobody seemed to notice.

I haven't felt anything, and I'm pretty skeptical that anyone else in town has.

I felt both of them but neither time did I think they were earthquakes.
The first time, I thought it was merely a big, loud truck driving the down the street that was shaking the building.
The second time was last night, with the rainy/stormy weather. I thought it was nothing more than thunder in the distance rattling the building.
In both cases, I didn't find out they were earthquakes until I saw the news stories about them.

I didn't feel last night's quake, but I certainly felt Saturday night's. It was very brief, but it was noticeable. I imagine however that if you were walking around when it struck, you probably wouldn't notice it.bobbyhawks wrote:I'm beginning to think that people are making it up that they can feel them in KC. I didn't feel any of them until Monday night. I was in a room with several glass display cases, and the glass door panes started to rattle. I thought it was wind or thunder, but the rattling went on for 15 seconds or so. I don't think I actually felt anything, but there may have been a very subtle rumble in the floor. If the glass didn't rattle, I would never have noticed a thing. This was on the second floor of a large building.
I have alerts set up through the USGS to email me when there's an earthquake, and sure enough there was an alert from Oklahoma at exactly the same time the glass rattled. 4.7 - smaller than the one over the weekend.

Flatland has an article quoting a letter written by an officer stationed at Fort Osage on Dec 16, 1811 about the earth shaking so violently it was hard to stand up with shaking lasting 8 minutes and the sound of distant thunder, trees losing branches, damage to chimneys and plaster. This was the western most report of the infamous New Madrid earthquake. There were not many people around here then to be impacted, nor built environment. Are we ready for a repeat of this? What would the damage be?
