Re: Columbus Park Redevelopment
When I looked at the Parade Park renderings in the Business Journal of Kansas City today, I immediately thought they should apply the same density and some of the building designs to the Columbus Park project.

Who posted the street grid reconstruction again??? LolKCDowntown wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2024 4:06 pm Just looked this intersection up on Google Maps, and realized what @ChrisStritzel was saying about rebuilding the street grid (this removes that curved road with nothing on it). This really takes this project to the next level. Hope it happens!

Now, Edward Franklin Building Co. is preparing to build 84 new single-family houses and townhomes for sale off Fourth Street, generally between Campbell and Gillis streets. Last year, the builder was chosen through a request for proposals issued by the Housing Authority of Kansas City (HAKC), which long has owned and sought residential development of more than 6 acres surrounding the Harrison Street DIY skate park.
...
Edward Franklin's current plan includes 58 townhomes, around 2,000 square feet, and 26 single-family homes, with 2,100- and 2,400-square-foot types. Originally, Baumgartner said his firm proposed 50 single-family homes but added townhomes after city officials asked for greater residential density. The townhomes are targeted to have sale prices in the $500,000 range, and the single-family homes are anticipated in the $700,000 range.
The project will remove the DIY skate park, which largely sits in the public right-of-way, as Edward Franklin restores the area's street grid by connecting Fourth between Campbell and Gillis, and Harrison and Gillis between Industrial Trafficway and Fifth Street. A neighborhood plaza southwest of Fourth and Harrison will preserve green space around the blocks of new residences, supplementing their private shared yards.
...
Edward Franklin looks to secure city plan approvals through January and start site work in early 2025. Vertical construction is targeted to follow that summer, with the first homes expected to arrive on the market in early 2026. The project has two phases: 41 and 43 units. The homebuilder plans 14 units a year over a six-year period but could increase that pace depending on demand, Baumgartner said.

I'd be a lot cooler if they saved the skatepark.... At least we are getting a replacement park under the new 169 bridge.

It's incredible to me that even as many family and acquaintances in my orbit become YIMBY-pilled (maybe my own influence on them) there are still so many that will find a problem with building housing and offering opportunities for ownership in urban KC.

Have there been any discussions on bringing a single stair rule to KC?FlippantCitizen wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2024 9:44 pm It's incredible to me that even as many family and acquaintances in my orbit become YIMBY-pilled (maybe my own influence on them) there are still so many that will find a problem with building housing and offering opportunities for ownership in urban KC.

On reddit specifically? Unsure about that. Broadly though, I see that a lot of advocacy for that in urbanist and pro housing twitter communities. My time spent in Europe really illuminated the awesome floor plans and efficiencies that can unlock. I was in some amazing small scale newer construction apartment buildings in Prague and Kracow that made me green with envy for what could be if we allowed single staircase.langosta wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2024 9:58 pmHave there been any discussions on bringing a single stair rule to KC?FlippantCitizen wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2024 9:44 pm It's incredible to me that even as many family and acquaintances in my orbit become YIMBY-pilled (maybe my own influence on them) there are still so many that will find a problem with building housing and offering opportunities for ownership in urban KC.

I spent too much time in that thread trying to make YIMBY arguments...FlippantCitizen wrote: ↑Thu Sep 05, 2024 9:44 pm It's incredible to me that even as many family and acquaintances in my orbit become YIMBY-pilled (maybe my own influence on them) there are still so many that will find a problem with building housing and offering opportunities for ownership in urban KC.

What can the rag do to make sure the skatepark under the Buck O' Neil happens?

Have been following the posts / discourse from the neighborhood side of things regarding the skate park and it seems to vary greatly from anything the skaters said. A lot more “these are squatters we tolerated” vibes and less “it was built by us for us”

I heard the developers have been receiving death threats over removing the skatepark... Yikes.
