All in all, a pretty successful redevelopment scheme by KC standards. Despite being on 12th street, that area was a pretty forgotten corner of downtown and the only occasion most ever had to go there were events at the MA and CC. I like the look of Barney Allis Plaza now with the Marriot and the 12 Wyandotte tower along with the other two hotels. BAP could be better integrated for certain (how to do that has been a lengthy discussion) but it's one place where some investment by the city to get the Vista hotel built and BAP renovated has paid dividends.herrfrank wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 2:49 pmThis would have been among the buildings demolished around 1984 for the current Marriott DT (not the newer Muehlebach addition, but the old Vista hotel). Re: Closed Bars and Restaurants
Forgotten how? By non residents? I lived 5 blocks from there and played at the fountain in Barney Allis Plaza every day as well as walked 12th street all the time. Even at a young age I never felt in danger even with the adult strip clubs/gay bars all along that block. Wasn't raised with a gender phobia so felt very safe downtown. In my mind, all of that development has taken my safe place away for highways and hotelsHighlander wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 4:52 pmAll in all, a pretty successful redevelopment scheme by KC standards. Re: Closed Bars and Restaurants
This year seems to be hitting hard on restaurants owned by African American Business Owners, always felt like these places were high profile with lots of social media buzz.
Its possible they just were not run very well, the locations also seems kind of tough.
Boho Sway at Canary - 38th and Main
Privee - This was on SW Blvd, its the big building that always seems to fail, the ambitions seemed very high
Soiree - 18th and Vine - Seemed like a super popular brunch spot

^Correct. Think these guys didn't know how to run a business. They stopped paying contractors, basically said they would trade free work for social media status. Think they these guys were social media influencers and not really business people. The concept seemed cool but definitely flawed

Restaurants are one of the businesses with the highest failure rate. Even experienced restaurant operators have restaurants that fail.

2/3 of those concepts were dead on arrival
I do wish I could have tried storiee. Is their airport location still open?

Agree on DOA. Yes, Soiree is keeping the airport location for now, per Star.Cratedigger wrote: ↑Fri Aug 16, 2024 6:56 am 2/3 of those concepts were dead on arrival

I fear for the the survival of Urban Cafe. I have been in there twice. Once we were the only table, the other time only 3 other tables. And both times we were the only non African Americans in the place, which is ridiculous as Hyde Park is white majority.

Well doesn't sound like any race is supporting them. Is it any good?

Which location? Armor and Troost? I'll have to go this week. Alot of these places like Soiree have been on a list to try, yet I hadn't made it there yet.

Re: Closed Bars and Restaurants
I wonder if it isn't also a little tough when a place like Urban Cafe has changed locations 3-4 times in almost as many years. Hopefully people will find them at the new spot for the long-term.
