Ok can we just remove “boulevard” from grand already? “Grand Stroad” is the only accurate descriptor at this point

It only became a "boulevard" relatively recently. For over a century it was Grand Avenue. For some reason it was arbitrarily switched to boulevard even if it does not meet the definition of a boulevard.

"at this point"

The street has never been lined with trees enough to be called a Boulevard but now that the one block with the most trees lost a few, the worlds ending. Is anyone here focused on getting the city to plant more trees along the hundreds of miles on sidewalks it controls in the city or the even just the 1.5miles of grand it mostly has control over between river market and crown center?

PNL could remove all but two trees in this block and still have twice the average amount as other blocks along Grand!

DColeKC wrote: Tue Jun 18, 2024 6:33 pm No one requested the trees be deliberately removed. They were damaged and could not be saved, the tenants asked for them to not be replaced so at this time, that request is being honored but who knows, they might replace them at some point.

I didn't take his comment to mean directly because of these specific trees that have been much ballyhooed, just in general the road is not a Blvd. Yes people are very focused on getting trees all over downtown, especially the crossroads. There have been multiple posts about it, city hall is focused on it ( https://www.kcmo.gov/city-hall/departme ... free-trees ), as are Not for Profits ( https://bridgingthegap.org/heartland-tree-alliance/ )

I think the Grand Boulevard thing was the brainchild of the Sasaki Plan.

Boulevards are regulated by the parks dept. I dont know if they are considered the same as a park, if they are they cant be taken from the parks dept without a public vote.

My comment was sarcasm. My point is that Grand barely resembles an actual “Boulevard” which is a bad thing. It should become more parklike

What about Grand is remotely "Boulevard"? It's a very shitty street. It literally looks like shit and is about as far from being a "Boulevard" or a "Parkway" as you can get. It looks like something that is more fitting for the east bottoms.

A lot of that is because it's so poorly developed along much of Grand, but it's also just because Grand is nothing but a big swatch of deteriorating concrete. It has almost no treatments to it in any way. Even the pavement markings look 50 years old. The only part of Grand that is even respectable is the portion through the P&L District. And we come full circle as to why the P&L District bonds were worth the money...

The Parks department needs to just let the city have full control of Grand and let the city alone try and do something with it.

I don’t think I can ever overstate (no matter what I think of Cordish at times) how much of an absolute boon P&L has been in providing a “Downtown Living room” for major sports events and civic happenings. It never gets old seeing a crowd absolutely erupt after a major win. At the end of the day we can argue about leases, vacant retail space, speed of development, or any of the other factors frequently discussed, but by god I think that the “living room” alone could justify the entire endeavor. Link to the Royals WC win moment below.

"Kansas City Live!" has truly been such a catalyst for the entire project. I know some folks in here may get sick of my cheerleading but I can't stress enough that some very important city leaders and Fifa officials give it partial credit for securing the World Cup. The watch parties are big for our community and city on many levels.

Agreed. The City has really embraced the "KC Live" area for sporting events and major gatherings as a watch party place. It has been that catalyst for sure.

Here's a permit for the removal of the canopy membrane above the Live Block.

Permit says it’s to prepare for replacement.
