That's fine with respect to data centers and the technology side of these large logistic parks but a lot of the land ultimately go to distribution centers and warehouses that don't employ all that many people, pay rather poorly and have major sustainability issues. It's crazy that we would subsidize this stuff. A trip around google maps will show a rapid proliferation in the KC area of the massive warehouse culture in the exurbs: https://www.google.com/maps/@38.7764789 ... ?entry=ttu
Exactly. It's so stupid how cities and states are fighting over who will give the most tax breaks to these distribution centers. They employ very few, they produce all kinds of wear and tear on infrastructure, often infrastructure that needs to be built or expanded to accommodate these buildings and their truck traffic.

It's corporate welfare at its worst.

I can kind of see the data centers I guess. But those are popping up as much as warehouses now.

I guess you have to play the game or get nothing, but the highways in MO are outdated and poorly maintained (at least in the KC area). And I'm not sure you really want to build your city around trucks anyway. The highways in metro Indy are getting stupid big just because of the trucks.

Be careful what you wish for with these all these warehouses. There are some stretches of highways in rural IN and IL where there are more big semi trucks than cars. No way MODot can really handle that kind of truck traffic on its highway system.

My view in those areas every time I drive to KC:

I transit that corridor and most of America regularly. The increase in truck traffic like you photographed isn't due to warehouses. It's due to a massive backlog of available rail transportation, and the push to offload fuels pipeline traffic to rail, which displaces regular freight and forces it to being transported over the road via trucks. ALL of that traffic could be shifted back to rail if our country had infrastructure to support it and politicians that weren't trying to score brownie points by crippling our pipeline network.

Coal trains also take up a lot of track time. Weaning ourselves off coal should relieve that traffic. My family lives in NW Missouri and the rail line that runs through there is primarily coal trains.

Trains also carry much of the shale oil down from the northern plains.

Berkshire Hathaway (BNSF) and Union Pacific are HQ'ed in Nebraska. Buffet was one of Obama's biggest donors. Nebraska Supreme Court and the Obama administration did the most to kill the Keystone Pipeline. Follow the money.

KCI is going to be totally surrounded by massive warehouse parks in the near future. Another one just announced.

Not sure what took so long for the KCI area to become developed like this with all the flat land and highway infrastructure/airport.

Amazing news. Too bad most of these warehouses are not dealing in products going bh air cargo. Wish our airport area had freight rail service (and rapid rail) to get a lot of this traffic off the roads.

The new airport terminal, despite having no impact to freight per se, is a good selling point. I hear it brought up in all sorts of deals and pitches.

Looks like KCI 29 Logistics Park just attracted a tenant. ACE Hardware. 1.5 million square foot facility.

That's absurd. Can we go through a period on un-incorporating some of this annexed land from the last century.
