No one talks about it, but the US is always the emergency world cup host should something go wrong because we have so much infrastructure available for it and can run a tournament on relatively short notice.
Ecuador didn't want Copa America so the us is hosting now. And that's in 2024. Back in 2003 we hosted the women's world cup with a few months notice.
Which is just to say, there's plenty of time to spin up a city to host. They just announced the format. I think if Chicago called, the phone would be answered.

Oh no doubt, we’re leagues ahead in regards to a lot of that, especially stadium infrastructure.
