Milwaukee Towers

Post by normalthings »

Milwaukee has some interesting proposals over the past decade. Even their public housing authority has had multiple mixed-income tower proposals. Basically building a 20-30 floor nice tower with some affordable units. A few office and apartment towers have been constructed but I only posted the best. They have also had multiple major employers look at big new downtown offices.

Some Very Hot Buildings proposed and under construction:

The Couture
Under Construction:322 units, 44 floors at 537'

Got to spend some time in Milwaukee last summer, their built environment is fantastic, especially between Water street and the lake. Public transit got high marks too. These will be great additions.

It’s really struggled to get public support it seems. Their funding mechanism also struggles considering they were initially accounting for fare revenue

Couture will nicely fill in the lakefront skyline. DT Milwaukee is really more centered on the rivers than lake, so it looked anemic approaching from Lake Michigan.

I’ve not seen the lake view of the city, but I did think it was an oddly centered skyline when we were there

As someone who has spent some time developing in Milwaukee, the Hop has never seemed to come close to the results of the KC streetcar. In part, I chalk it up to the lack of favorable geography compared to Kansas City. KC's largely north-south linear development pattern really helps. It is easy to intuit where the streetcar is headed. In contrast, the Hops' zigzag route hampers its usefulness.

But Milwaukee does have a great linear route that they missed out on, all it had to do was go straight down Wisconsin Ave which is Milwaukees main street, u would have gotten stops at Marquette University, the convention center, then it could have went north on Van Buren where there is a lot of apartments and a few blocks from the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

I agree that would have made more sense, and likely would have helped revitalize more quickly Wisconsin Avenue west of the river.

Most modern streetcar cities made this routing mistake -- zigzagging to hit every front door.

Good for Milwaukee. Northwestern Mutual will redefine the city’s skyline with a $500 million investment into its downtown campus.
