Ronda Smith and Grace Cabrera were definitely two of the three kissing the ass of the anti-pedestrian crowd tonight. I believe the third was Pam Mason, but I’m not 100% sure. All I know is they think this is their shot to boost their campaigns.

All three were there. I think Chris Gahagan was as well? Someone from District 1 sitting in the front was one of the first to speak out against bike lanes. Lotta Northlanders there tonightChris Stritzel wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 8:14 pm Ronda Smith and Grace Cabrera were definitely two of the three kissing the ass of the anti-pedestrian crowd tonight. Re: 2023 KCMO Election
Why isn't BikeKC dragging their constituents out to these events to provide pushback?
I don't see anything on their news page about these events and people opposing their efforts. If a group can't get its people out to defend their efforts, then they are going to lose and the bike lanes will get ripped out.

One side it seems, is at least being logical about its engagements. The anti bike lane crowd I imagine would have no problem with intimidation tactics and things of the like should more vocal support come out.

Then BikeKC is going to lose. If bike advocates aren't willing to show up to defend their efforts, they will lose. You can't back down to intimidation.

Intimidation? How about we show up in force, wearing t-shirts depicting Che Guevara riding a bike, with loaded AR-15s, zip ties, and bear spray, chanting about how they should take their shitty little storefronts back to Mayberry? Isn't this how politics is done these days?
Sigh.

Re: 2023 KCMO Election
I specifically picked Che because I suspect the anti-bike-lane people feel they are the "rebels" here, standing up to "the man" trying to impose his will, when the reality is we have had cars imposed on us--rammed down our throats, if you will--for 50 years by big oil and auto manufacturers, and government subsidies in the form of highways and everything, and when we try just a little teensy, teeny tiny itty bitty bit to just barely push back in a slightly meaningful way, and it's all OMG THEY'RE TAKIN MAH CAR! So I think this is the rebellion position, and the "keep ramming it down my throat because I like it" position is the one laying there and taking it.
Just cause you like it doesn't mean it's good for ya.
But it could have just as easily been Leia Organa or your favorite "rebel", fictional or otherwise.

All of this. I’m so tired of the lashing out by folks who think that any small accommodation for any other means of transit is a direct attack on their ability to drive. It’s borderline exhaustingmean wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 10:48 am I specifically picked Che because I suspect the anti-bike-lane people feel they are the "rebels" here, standing up to "the man" trying to impose his will, when the reality is we have had cars imposed on us--rammed down our throats, if you will--for 50 years by big oil and auto manufacturers, and government subsidies in the form of highways and everything, and when we try just a little teensy, teeny tiny itty bitty bit to just barely push back in a slightly meaningful way, and it's all OMG THEY'RE TAKIN MAH CAR! You gotta appreciate his hustle though. Good ole' Clay may have lost a ton over the years, but he doesn't give up the hope that maybe, just maybe, he'll win and get his citywide transit/greewnway plan. As such, I'd vote for himAnthony_Hugo98 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 6:35 pmChris Stritzel wrote: ↑Sat Jan 21, 2023 6:22 pm Mayor

Wes Rogers joining the council is already a +1 win. No idea how good Fowler was but Rogers is very solid. Fingers crossed we come out of this with an even better council...

Fowler is by far one of the worst in the chambers, if he is being replaced by default it is a huge win!

Re: 2023 KCMO Election
Surprised KC council members halt bid exploring some privatization
(Probably) An example of tensions between the council and Platt's desire to move quickly
(Probably) An example of tensions between the council and Platt's desire to move quickly
The city recently issued a request for information from groups "that would increase revenues, bookings and reduce the cost of operations" through privatizing management and operations for the Kansas City Convention Center and American Royal Center. The city's Convention and Entertainment Facilities Department now oversees both.
But the City Council last week pressed pause on the effort after several members said they were surprised to learn about the request for information. On Jan. 19, the council unanimously passed an ordinance directing Platt to "refrain from engaging in any further actions to outsource the Convention and Entertainment Facilities operations performed by City staff without City Council approval."
The measure also mandates council approval for future RFPs on outsourcing any city services or functions. And it directed Platt to create a process and threshold for future outsourcing that factors in job retention, relevant collective bargaining agreements, reducing costs of service delivery and public feedback on customer satisfaction.
