I realize we have to mostly blame our Republican controlled state legislature for overcontrol of us as a local entity, but why hasn't there been any effort in Congress to pass a bill striping the states of the ability to regulate local police forces? If we are the only one in the country that has this happen, it seems like it would be easy to pass. Democrats control the House, Senate and President right now. Why hasn't Cleaver submitted legislation? It seems it might be more important than anything else he's working on.
It's possible that such legislation might be seen as unconstitutional on the federal level. It might interfere with states' rights.

The Supreme Court might say a state needs to retain the power to intercede in local policing. Examples might be local police departments refusing to enforce state laws, applying laws unfairly, or with a bias toward specific citizens; and dealing with local corrupt police departments, which is what happened in the case of St. Louis and Kansas City under political bosses.

Granted, it's ridiculous that Kansas City is still under state control decades after the problem existed.

I wonder though how the SC would view a case asserting that the state is punishing a city for political reasons, or pass laws to punish local politicians for their political views or actions.

More candidates have jumped into the race, so I feel like I should make a list of all who is running and where. I tried to include their campaign websites. If I'm missing anyone, let me know. I never realized all council seats are up for election, unless I'm reading it wrong.

Candidates that are bolded are incumbents running for election. Candidates that are italicized and underlined are KCTenants backed candidates. I imagine a few more candidates will jump into the race, but time is running out to do so unless said candidate has exceptional name recognition. They have a little over 5 months to make their case to voters.

These are all based on the Missouri Ethics Commission website.

Mayor
- Quinton Lucas (https://quintonlucas.org)
- Andrew McGuire

District 1
- Nathan Willet (https://www.nathanforthenorthland.com)
- Chris Gagahan (https://www.chrisforkc.com)

District 1 At-Large
- Kevin O'Neill (https://kevinoforkc.com)
- Ronda Smith (https://rondasmithforkc.com)

District 2
- Richard Sayles (https://www.saylesforkccouncil.com)

District 2 At-Large
- Wes Rogers (https://www.rogersforkansascity.com - website not yet active)
- Matt Mauer (https://www.mauerforkc.com)
- Mickey Younghanz (https://mo4mickey.com)
- Jenay Manley (https://www.jenayforkc.com)

District 3
- Melissa Robinson (https://melissarobinson.org)

District 3 At-Large
- Brandon Ellington (http://www.electellington.com)
- Darron Story (https://storyforkc.com)
- Melissa Patterson Hazley (no website yet - https://twitter.com/mph4kcmo)

District 4
- Eric Bunch (https://ericwbunch.com)
- Crissy Dastrup (https://www.crissyforkc.com)
- Henry Rizzo (https://rizzoforthecity.com)

District 4 At-Large
- Justin Short (https://www.justinshortforkc.com)
- Jess Blubaugh (https://jessforkc.com)
- Crispin Rea (https://crispin4kc.com)
- Lindsay French (unclear)

District 5
- Ryana Parks-Shaw (https://www.ryanaparksshaw.com)
- Desmound Logan (unclear)

District 5 At-Large
- Michael Kelley (https://www.kelleyforkc.com)
- Darrell Curls (https://www.therealcurlsforcouncil.com)
- Erik Dickinson (https://www.dickinsonforkc.com)

District 6
- Dan Tarwater (https://www.votetarwater.com/home)
- Cecilia Carter (https://www.carterforkcmo.com)
- Michael Schuckman (https://michaelschuckmanforkc.com)
- Johnathan Duncan (https://www.duncanforkc.com)

District 6 At-Large
- Andrea Bough (https://andreaforkc.com)
- Jill Sasse (https://www.jillsasseforkc.com)

Based on who's running and which races are crowded, I can see the 4th and 6th In-District races advancing to runoffs, same with the At-Large races in Districts 2, 4 and 5.

Mayor: Lucas wins

District 1: Rhonda stands for "Dedicated to Finding Solutions for the Out-of-Control Crime in our City" and "Stand Against Government Overreach & Mandates"

District 2: please someone else run

District 2 at large: Wes hopefully wins!

District 3 AL: Darron Story sounds more pro-transit/development than Ellington and also willing to get stuff done.

District 4: Bunch and Short are my choices

District 5 At-Large
- Michael Kelley would be my choice.

District 6: Shuckman and Bough?

We don't have runoffs, just nonpartisan primaries. You don't a majority to advance.

I believe all candidates will appear on the primary ballot and then the top two (if there are two) will appear on the general.

I know it's wrong, but I can't help connecting Crispin Rea to Funkhouser. I know everything connected to that mayor shouldn't stink with him, but somehow in my head it does.

Ah. Ok. I thought there were runoffs, so it's the more standard way of doing things then.

Best value boost on their would be getting Story over Ellington. Story is great. Ellington is far from it, for our causes.

He was canvassing down at the Price Chopper in Brookside this afternoon. He asked me to sign and I said "There is not a chance, Mr. Chastain". He was gone when I came out.

Not the most interesting story I've ever told but there it is. :D

^You’re speaking the truth though, not like he’ll listen.

I had the chance to chat with Johnathan Duncan the other night at Justin Short’s event. A nice guy and easy to talk to. I plan to chat with him again about ideas and how shared goals can make Kansas City much better. We agree that in exchange for incentives, the city/community needs to get something out of it. My idea was a public amenity or maybe some sort of investment into public parks, both seemed to capture his attention. I also said Airbnb’s are a nuisance and it would be good to try and get some of those apartment units occupied by Airbnbs turned back into actual housing so some of the demand can be met with supply. We touched on affordable housing for a few second, but we didn’t have enough time to dive into that.

Jenay Manley was there as well, but I didn’t get the chance to chat with her.

Justin Short’s event was nice though. A full house at Shooters Bar and an enthusiastic crowd. I can’t see how he loses. His positive energy and outlook is contagious.

I don't really know how Hernandez lasted so long as communications director. Sounds like spilled milk.

City manager and maybe even the mayor had tweeted that KC Star was emphasizing pot hole filling vs. the city's shift towards just resurfacing streets completely.

Hernandez is a former journalist in the City. As someone trained as a journalist myself, I will say that being asked to lie directly to the public by an appointed or elected official is unethical, and I can understand why Hernandez refused to do it.

I have suffered retribution from management myself (not as a journalist), so I will say don't be so quick to call this "spilled milk." Hernandez could be operating from a position of ethics here. Don't be so quick to defend an appointed or elected official and quick to dismiss a City employee.

I worked in state government years ago in another state and certainly saw how state employees would be placed under pressure by politicians and appointed management to lie for them. I wouldn't do it, and no government employee should be required to do it. Citizens should want their city and state employees to refuse to lie for political purposes.

If Platt asked a City employee to lie to the public deliberately, that is something to be concerned about.

This is especially true since there is a move to have Platt approve city subsidy approvals and not the Council. If he has ethical lapses, I don't want him to have that responsibility.

I was skeptical of this move to "streamline" policy to begin with, and now I'm even more so.

If Platt did tell city staff to lie to the media, he should be fired immediately by the Council.

I had a positive view of Platt until I read this article. Let's hope it's not true, but I doubt Hernandez would have filed the lawsuit otherwise. He is risking his future reputation in the City by doing it.

As someone who really likes Platt, Hernandez is not an anonymous nobody, this story will have legs.

I didn't see an outright lie in the request. He said let's say 300 miles instead of around 300 miles. Seems pretty innocuous to me, and how are going to be positive that the number of miles won't be increased? Of course, government workers are usually pretty letter of the law and maybe Hernandez wanted to say, "We are repaving 287.6 miles." This is where business and public service diverge pretty strongly. A business owner wouldn't waste the time to research the exact number running a few people around for a day to get the number. Private businesspeople would just say, "About 300." and get on with some more important work.

My opinion of Platt hasn’t changed any. I’ve seen way worse while I was doing things in St. Louis, some of which went out to the media and some that hasn’t yet.

Reading that story, it makes it sound like the request to lie was for things like mileage and not other things. I’m interested to hear more, but I’m genuinely curious if this is a retaliation on Hernandez’s part. He may have the credentials, but if you’re let go for some, are upset, and want payback, you can always resort to taking something that might not be so bad and blowing it way up out of proportion.

We’ll see what happens and Platt is entitled to a fair process. If it is found that he asked, on multiple occasions, his staff to lie about very important things, then he should be let go. If it is found Hernandez blew this way out of proportion and Platt only wanted to nitpick more than lie, then Hernandez just screwed his future.
