AlkaliAxel wrote: Thu Jun 16, 2022 4:32 am I did some research on the candidates running for council - here were the best pro-development candidates I found:

Lindsay French- District 2 at-large

She mentions several times on her page about the value of density along transit corridors. Seems very very pro-KC in general as well, no attitude about "the northland/eastside deserves more!" or anything like that.

Darron Story-District 3 at-large (challenging Ellington)

Straight from his site: "We need to focus on urban planning that aligns with our Transit-oriented Development Plan, incentivize companies to locate in our urban core already served by existing transit options and pursue innovative projects that can attract federal funding and the young professionals who will want to live here and help us grow the smart way."

Justin Short- District 4 at-large
Michael Kelley- District 5 at-large

And of course you all know these two

There were other candidates that had potential to be pro-dev but I wasn't fully clear. Some good names up there though.
Add in Wes Rogers for District 2 In-District to this list

He's now full bore feuding with them. This is excellent to watch.

Someone in power needed to call them out. Didn’t think Lucas would be the one to do it

They accused him of being bought out by developers for a few thousand worth of donations, so apparently that's where the draws the line. LOL

I know alot of you don’t like Mayor Q but we need him to win re-election. I think he gets it on urbanism now. He’s also done a good job at raising KC’s national profile over his 4 years- he’s on national TV a lot. And if he loses it’s probably to someone much worse.

I don’t think there are any real opposition candidates. There are potentially better people who could run but no one is running.

I could see someone from east side challenging him on "he said he would support us and he neglected us for big developers"

Emphasis on the “real” opposition candidates.

This entire exchange is making me unreasonably happy. Mayor Q has a pretty solid and agreeable demeanor, so for them to be this aggressively hostile towards him is really hurting what good will they have built.

Working in Q's favor is that if I'm recalling correctly there's only been one mayor since term limits were enacted who didn't win a second term, and say what you want about Lucas but he's not nearly the disaster that Funk was.

Hardly too early. Viable opposition would already be campaigning

There's not too many incumbents running again.

However, if Mayor Q's new idea passes, council won't matter much for urban agenda anyway

KCTenants stoped tonight’s show at the StarLight to protest Mayor Lucas.

This is example of self defeating behavior, they’re only pushing people away from their message with actions like this.

What a bunch of losers. Honestly. They’re pissed at the mayor and next thing you know, they’ll have one of their own running for mayor. These types of antics only make people pissed off at them because they’re ruining someone’s night out.

I have yet to see KCTenants counter to the fact they have halted housing construction

Lucas has to take a little heat for engaging and giving KC Tenants the spotlight early in his term. How successfully he marginalizes them will be a metric in grading his second term.
