Kansas City Sandwiches

Post by KC1963 »

Been in Dallas 20+ years now but grew up in KC and miss living in a place with soul. I know all of these sandwiches don't exist in the same way or even at all but a list of my favorites in KC in no particular order.

Kelly's Deli in the 70s - they had 8 different breads, 10 different deli meats, and 10 different cheeses. They used steamers to make the sandwiches. They were incredible.

Mario's Grinders in Westport

BBQ brisket sandwiches at Bryants, Gates, Rosedale and the best of all time, Harris BBQ (24th and Brooklyn) in the 1980s. Too bad the 'rolled up bills under the plate' trick at Bryant's got spread too far. My dad showed me in the 60s when you could buy at Bryants and take it right into the old stadium. Mom still called it Charlie Bryant's when she came back to KC.

Max's Burgers on Wornall

Italian Sausage Sandwiches at the Red Front Inn

Tenderloin Grill - mustard, onion and hot sauce.

LaSala's on 5th - the sandwiches had 8-10oz of meat and cost less than other places doing the standard 4oz.

The only other sandwich I crave outside of the above is a Pastrami Reuben from Katz's Deli in NYC.

My dude, where in Dallas are you?

Great American Hero may be changing ownership but its subs are still top notch

If in grapevine, Weinbergers is fantastic too
