Re: Katz on Main
Midtown has been statistically gentrified for at least a decade. It was done by a lot of the neighborhood types who are now fighting against gentrification. And, ironically, Redeemer's mere presence (and accompanying hordes of white kids, including whoever wrote that letter) has raised property values more than this project ever will. But that's in support of their "mission", and the Katz is just garden variety capitalism... so those are different, I guess.

Katz project should've included a broader public use such as public market. Would likely gain more acceptance outside the hardcore haters.

Gentrification is not renovating an abandoned drug store.

This is where horseshoe theory really is true. In the end, the far left just doesn’t want any change to happen out of fear. Same as the far right.

Fair enough. They're keeping the archictrually significant parts of the facade and clock. It was a CVS for awhile, so it's not like it's in 1930's condition anymore.TheLastGentleman wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 5:53 pmDemolishing most of an abandoned drug storealejandro46 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 4:36 pm Gentrification is not renovating an abandoned drug store.

The part of the drug store to be demolished is a late seventies addition made after Katz went out of business and Skaggs closed the basement.

Re: Katz on Main
based on the development I've seen of small shops and once vacant old strip mall store fronts you can never have enough tattoo parlors, vape shops, payday loan places and or pawn shops.Goonies wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 10:00 pm So what happens with Main from armor to atleast where Buddies used to be? It seems to be kinda bare for a Main street in midtown of a city with a hodgepodge of crop stores sprinkled in. Will we see more development as we get closer to the street car line being completed in that area?
Also the "discount smokes" liquor store combo seems to be a big hit as well, and CBD places

I agree. It's almost impossible to reconfigure a building with a slightly pitched roof to be flat and include the weight of a pool. This will likely be a shell with a new structure built on the inside to support the weight of the amenity deck. Or at least partially.

I posted here before the on-going engineering study as they want to put the amenity deck on the existing structure

Can you repost? Unless the original roof was massively overbuilt, I'm curious how that would work.

I'll vote YES as long as the amenity deck is called the Aloha deck please.

Some Kansas City residents want to halt the sale of the historic Katz Drug Store in midtown
https://www.kcur.org/housing-developmen ... in-midtown...
Six months after the Kansas City Council approved tax breaks for a proposal to turn the former Katz Drug Store in Westport into amenities for nearby luxury apartments, some Kansas City residents are asking the owner of the building to back out of its sale.

Oh fuck this shit. If you bow to this, you may as well just cancel capitalism in this city and turn it over to being ruled by the mob.

It’s a shame. This looks like an incredible project that has a chance of being a landmark along the streetcar line.
The article mentioned the petition had just over 200 signatures. Is that a lot for things like this? It doesn’t sound like a ton, but I’m new to local politics.

Re: Katz on Main
There needs to be consideration from opposition that stopping these projects is pushing development further to the outskirts and hurting the environment. We need to find a way to ease the risk of displacement and appease them without a ban on development
