I agree about the hideous building...but I think I will like the skyline better with it gone:

my bad attempt at pasting a P&L district painting on the side.

Skyline doesn't have the same flavor from this angle for me.....not that I'm sad to see it go.

The forward (southern) position of the ATT building gives it a prominence out of proportion with its true height. Consequently, the tower on top actually had the appearance of another skyscraper on the skyline (when viewed from the south) and, indeed, that space does seem a bit empty without it.

One thing I did notice from Scooter and KCKropf's shots of the Power and Light District is that the ATT building is extremely isolated to the point it just looks strange rising out the sea of surface lots around it. Kind of looks like the conning tower of a submarine.

I have always thought that, it will be a missed part of the skyline, especially at night. That’s why I did not want to see it come down.

That’s ok, they plan on adding 12 stories of condos to the top right?

Any updates on the big crane? I didn't come in that way this morning.

I can't believe anyone will miss these. Bigest blemish on our skyline. Like abandonded smokestacks of the microwave '80s. And so out of place with the rest of the towers in the loop.

The process is going really slowly. It's gradually removing pieces but I have only taken 1 picture so far for my disassembly slideshow and there's really no noticable difference yet between when I took it yesterday and now.

They are taking down that shorter structure as well.

I still can't figure out why they are doing this.

Here is an update:

Every antenna tower is regulated, inspected and certified by the FCC. It is VERY expensive to maintain a tower like this to FCC standards. Not to mention that they are probably paying out the yang for insurance on it. So if they stopped using it 3 years ago and FCC inspections came up this year they probably have 80k to 120k worth of work to get it up to snuff, judging from the rust. Cheaper just to take it down.

This is frustratingly slow to watch, even in time lapse. I wish they were using helicopters like they did when putting them up. SIX DAYS elapsed between these two photos:

Of course this is one of the two ugliest towers in the city (the other being the Double Tree Hotel), but I think the removal of the antenna will only make the building uglier. The removal of the cladding has given the building a semi-industrial look and I think it looks much better than before.

That building really does need a mural or something to cover up the expanse of the slab in the sky.

I know I've said it before, but the Doubletree just reminds me of something that belongs in Miami when lit with those colors at night and the parking garage that it sits upon is terrible, with those blank walls facing the street.

I think the At&t building will look stupid without the structure on top, at least before you could tell what the building was and it adds height to the skyline.

so who wants to start the "Put a grand monument ontop the AT&T building" campaign?
KC Region is all part of the same animal regardless of state and county lines.
Think on the Regional scale.
