I don't think so. They haven't been very involved in sports world so far and Neal was worth around $1.5B at his death split between a couple kids. I would say Illig would be more inclined to throw money in.

With NBA and NHL expansion this would be a great time to try to have a publicly owned team where people buy shares similar to the Packers.

There’s a 0% chance either league would allow that to happen.brewcrew1000 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 16, 2021 4:27 pm With NBA and NHL expansion this would be a great time to try to have a publicly owned team where people buy shares similar to the Packers.
I think kc could put together an ownership group here if there is someone serious about it. It would have to involve a lot of minority owners and probably some outside bank money, but nothing that would scare the nba.
I just don’t know a principle owner.

Sherman paid $1B for the Royals. If the expansion fee really is the same, I don’t see anyone paying that for a team in Kansas City for the NBA. And if the league really does need the money due to Covid losses, they’ll choose a city that will pay it, likely Vegas since the owner could probably make as much money on the gambling aspect as the actual team profits. The arena basically becomes one big casino or you use your team to bring traffic to your already established casino.

Agree it would take a ownership group. I still feel a hockey team would be better for downtown businesses compared to the NBA.

NHL fans simply spend more money. NHL attendance is slightly better as in percentage of available seats sold as well.
I personally prefer basketball and from an operations standpoint flipping the arena from hockey to concert or basketball is much harder and time consuming.

Capacity for NHL is lower than NBA, so is attendance higher by total or percentage? Sorry, just curious about these things. Obviously ice is more expensive to maintain so I would imagine that would effect total site revenue.DColeKC wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 10:18 amNHL fans simply spend more money. Re: NHL OR NBA, let the message board decide!!
Google has average attendance being basically the same for both sports.
Average ticket prices:
MLB - $34 (Statista)
NBA - $52 (ESPN)
NHL - $135 (Ticket IQ)
NHL STL Blues - $164 (SeatGeek)
NFL - $151 (Seat Geek)
Royals tickets can regularly be had for <$15 and the games average 18,500 fans. I would be worried that a 4 times more expensive sport would pull in even fewer fans. Royals play about double the number of home games but are 1/4th the cost of NHL.

Ducks tickets are regularly <$20 when I've traveled to Southern California so I'm not sure that that's a relevant measure, it's probably very market-specific and average can be skewed if there's more of a market on the high-end.

You can't get a ticket in the top of the top deck on a weeknight at a Caps game for under $50. A decent lower row upper deck seat is typically $80-90. Forget lower deck anywhere for under 150.TheBigChuckbowski wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:06 pm Ducks tickets are regularly <$20 when I've traveled to Southern California so I'm not sure that that's a relevant measure, it's probably very market-specific and average can be skewed if there's more of a market on the high-end.
Those prices are way too high for KC, but I realize DC is a different market (much larger and more affluent).
I still think KC would support either NHL or NBA. Like the Royals and in some years even the Chiefs, the problem is they can't sell tickets. Everybody in KC is a sports fan and they watch the games on TV, but showing up and paying pro prices for tickets seems to be more of a struggle. The Royals barely got to average by MLB standards when they went to the WS and two years later they were back in the bottom five. The Chiefs are consistently one of the cheapest tickets in the NFL and their attendance drops quickly if they start to lose.
It's such a waste that KC doesn't have a team in the winter for having such a nice arena. Downtown still really needs something like a pro team to bring people down there on a regular basis and concerts is not regular enough.
And "KC" does not have a college team. It's not like Jayhawks play in the city more than a couple of times a year. Plus, it's about time for KC to grow up and care a little less about colleges (that are not even based in the city) and try to get a pro team.
Still, it's worth a try even if KC is just another low revenue nobody team in the NBA or NHL. It would still be great for the city, especially downtown.

By percentage because yes, the hard total tickets sold per game isn’t an accurate measure. I’d imagine a NHL team is more expensive on the operations side but due to hard salary caps, it’s far less expensive on the players side.shinatoo wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 12:26 pmCapacity for NHL is lower than NBA, so is attendance higher by total or percentage? I’m all for getting a pro team but college basketball has been very kind to KC and we have established ourselves as a great college basketball city and market.GRID wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:23 pmYou can't get a ticket in the top of the top deck on a weeknight at a Caps game for under $50. I get that and KC is great at hosting tourneys and stuff like that. But there is not even a team based in the city. It would be different if KC was like Louisville and actually had a team that played downtown. It doesn't, so move on and get a pro team to make the city more vibrant, something that running around town with college license plate logos and college sports gear doesn't really do. KC is a place where everybody has to constantly tell each other and everybody they come in contact with that they went to KU or MU or Kstate or OU, or Nebraska. Who cares lol. KC needs a pro team, downtown needs a team. Maybe it will take their minds off where they went (or wish they could have gone) to college 20 years ago. Will KC pay top NHL/NBA prices every night, every year? Probably not, but they don't have too. Lots of cities don't.DColeKC wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:41 pmI’m all for getting a pro team but college basketball has been very kind to KC and we have established ourselves as a great college basketball city and market.GRID wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:23 pmYou can't get a ticket in the top of the top deck on a weeknight at a Caps game for under $50. College sports bring visitors to KC that sell hotel rooms and f&B in a way that having a home team wouldn't. This also serves as a free advertisement for the city for large groups who may never have visited or thought of us otherwise. I would rather be a center for tournaments than be the home of the poorest in league team.GRID wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:47 pmDColeKC wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:41 pmI’m all for getting a pro team but college basketball has been very kind to KC and we have established ourselves as a great college basketball city and market.GRID wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:23 pm

KC also does a great job with youth sports and I 100% know that it brings in busloads of families who would never have visited KC otherwise. Its both rural towns and big cities that send club teams here to compete. I would really much rather have us focus our efforts on what brings in outside $$$$$.

Re: NHL OR NBA, let the message board decide!!
So KC can't host tournaments and be home to an NHL or NBA team? I'm really confused. I mean is KC the size of Tulsa or is it a region of 2.5 million people with a pro sport draw of many millions more? Not sure what being a great city for an occasional basketball tourney and suburban soccer matches have to do with the city's ability to have a pro team. I said it will mostly help downtown. Downtown KC needs something to bring people down there besides concerts. I understand the arena is a relatively busy concert arena, but it would barely rank at all when you include concerts + pro sports.

I am saying I think hosting tournaments does more for us than having an NBA or NHL team will. If I was to pick one of the 2, it would not be having a team based at Sprint CenterGRID wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 9:25 pm So KC can't host tournaments and be home to an NHL or NBA team?
