This is Seattle's Pikes Market which overlooks Elliott Bay. The elevated highway is now gone. The green area on the left is Victor Steinbrueck Park which is on the top of a public parking garage and has beautiful views of the bay.
Kansas City could do a similar, park on top of parking, just east of Main. The park would be at the River Market elevation with parking floors below grade down the bluff. The parking would be a block and a half from the market which would be about the same as in Seattle. I think the view of the Missouri would be excellent.
Close up of Seattle park and parking.
Close up on KC location.

^^ I think when mentioned before people noted rail ROW as a big issue. I also am not certain that providing more parking in the neighborhood is a great idea ( especially considering the parking leases apparently require replacement spots on the same parcel).

And I think I mentioned before that great cities figure out how to work with railroads and deal with problems like parking leases.
Of course great cities have great developers and lawyers too.

In theory the idea is not so bad. That particular location could difficult. That is one of the main KCP&L power substation for downtown on the right. The brown area on the left is part of Viola's property. Maybe it was their coal storage area? If so maybe it will be available at some point as they have suspended their coal usage.?

Does the city still own that little section of walnut street north of second street? without moving the electrical substations, the only other car entrance available for that parcel would be on grand right where the streetcar line to the riverfront will be.

City has selected WSP to design the Bike/Ped bridge to the Riverfront.

I think it's interesting that this is a corner building with a common wall facing 2nd street. My guess is it was built after 2nd street had been taken over by the railroads.

3rd Street road closure adjacent to the 3rd and Grand TOD parcel along with a water disconnect for 215 3rd Street. It sounds like enabling work for the big upcoming project.

Comparing an old picture of Planter's 513 Walnut building with today, it looks as if the entire facade must of been removed and rebuilt. Compare the brickwork around the windows and the added quoins at the edges. The new is beautiful but is it historic?

Midland wrecking has a road closure permit around there. Maybe a building on the south side is coming down?normalthings wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 2:03 am 3rd Street road closure adjacent to the 3rd and Grand TOD parcel along with a water disconnect for 215 3rd Street. That's the old bike shop.
It relates to this post from summer. I think we have the answer to what's happening with the building

The former Water Dept. building, at 201 Main, will be the new home to River Bluff Brewing.

Re: Status and future of the River Market area??
This dawned on me the other day. River Market needs a good mexican restaursnt. Kc taco and burrito bros are fine but need a more full service place with quality bar situation. Like an El Patron.
