The intent is good and it had a demonstrated need/purpose. I think a better idea would have been to shift the indent to the south, pushing the new construction in, keeping the sidewalk the normal width throughout.

This has been reported. It was not part of the development plan, as far as I can tell.

This whole city is full of these examples. Why? No inspections?

Agreed. I can see the slide in loading zone being helpful but we've given up too much sidewalk width, we shouldn't given up an inch more.

click in this photo to zoom in and it's clear the new cut is between the two OCS poles flanking the hotel.

The cut *couldn't* be shifted south without taking more sidewalk. Go look at the spot in google street view April 2019. You can see someone parked on the sidewalk because the track doesn't finish shifting back inwards until well past the midwest hotel. That southern OCS pole is within a no parking zone and the width is clearly too skinny for parking the way it was

That said, I don't see why this needed to be done. There's space seconds away on 20th St that could have been dedicated for the same purpose.

They should have expanded the sidewalk instead up to the line and put in a sculpture, seating area or such

DG was dropping off supplies today.

So great to see DGX embracing the long storefront and sidewalk (it looks like the shelving backing on all the windows is permanent).......

Each manager gets to pick the product mix and store layout. In our case, the Shawnee Dollar General manager+staff will be moving over to DGX. 1 month to target launch the manager did not know that DGX was going to be in the Crossroads, what exactly the Crossroads was, and that their customer base would not be the same as a dollar store. I would strongly suspect that the shelving backed windows are a design choice made by the local manager. Visit a suburban location and its the same setup.

^Hopefully they have a suggestion box allowing to suggest carrying products they have in full stores that fill downtown gaps. I don't think I've ever been in a full DG store... do they carry many products that downtown is lacking (and would be desirable)?

The backing looks like crap but if it means more product selection then throw some ads on it and let's go.

I heard they were open, but it was closed when I went by.

Those widows...oh my. I have to think that will get fixed eventually. What were they thinking?

Current status of the 20th Street side & restaurant:

The streetcar bollards next to the pick-up slip really highlights how uncoordinated this "addition" was:

The Walnut Street side, the garage entrance is shockingly small by KC standards:

Does it have enough to function as a normal grocery for people in the crossroads?

Depends on your diet, but it's so much closer to all Crossroad residents. It's more like a CVS when it comes to food. Lots of packaged foods and the produce selection is limited -- but nearly every household basic like toilet paper, paper towel, and Kleenex. We'll continue to go to Cosentino's and Broadway Butcher/Local Pig, just not as often.

reminds me of CVS back in the day when the basement still had produce.

Great addition to the crossroads. I'll use it often just being down around there so much.
