Former Councilman Chuck Eddy has died. Eddy represented the 6th District for two terms from 1999-2007. He was a chiropractor.

Eddy's family operated a restaurant and nightclub on the SW corner of 13th and Baltimore where Count Basie once performed.

I have heard from legitimate sources that the VA is looking at spending up to $1 Billion for capital expenditures in Missouri.

Wow -- I didn't know he was ill. I grew up with his cousins down the street (his uncle Ned was the owner of Eddy's Loaf and Stein, a deli-restaurant-bar with multiple locations, as well as Eddy's nightclub at 13th & Baltimore). The Eddy kids were a little older than we were, but I guess time catches up with everyone.FangKC wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2019 6:19 am Former Councilman Chuck Eddy has died. The Eddy clan was originally from Lebanon.

https://www.kansascity.com/news/politic ... 76077.htmlMy one request of all of you is do not rest on our laurels. If you look back at our history in Kansas City we have a tendency to have a burst of activity, and then we kind of declare victory and we go to sleep for 20 years.
And Mayor Lucas' comments:In the coming months, Schulte said he expects to see turnover among senior city staff. He’s the third high-ranking city official to announce his retirement in recent months following former Finance Director Randy Landes and Human Resources Director Gary O’Bannon.

Next out will be the pro-development boards (Port KC, TIF, etc) Lucas mentioned this today.bspecht wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 10:25 amnormalthings wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 11:59 amI said this was happening months ago and was not believed.FangKC wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 12:39 am City Manager Troy Schulte announces retirement

It’s frustrating to see so many people dedicated to revitalizing the city get booted out.

Re: Politics
From KC Star: Lucas has 3 goals - Development “Reform”, Water Department, Airport
- City Manager Troy Schulte’s decision to leave his job is covered with the fingerprints of Mayor Quinton Lucas, who is clearly consolidating power at City Hall.
- In mid-September, Lucas asked for resignation letters from board members for a dozen city agencies, including Port KC. He wants his own people in those seats, he said Thursday.
- Pat Klein was safe as long as Schulte remained on the job. That protection is gone.
- The mayor will lead the effort to find a new city manager, who won’t be fully up to speed until next summer at the earliest. Who fills the power vacuum between now and then? Quinton Lucas, that’s who.
- In less than two months in office, Lucas has moved to take control of the city’s government. Troy Schulte’s departure is the clearest possible reflection of that effort.

Re: Politics
Unfortunately, I have been around long enough to see the cycle Schulte talks about. Incremental progress followed by insane, "OH MY GOD YOU HAVE GONE TOO FAR I DON'T WANT TO LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY!!!!!" pushback which shits all over everything for a generation, followed by an iota of incremental progress. I don't think there's any stopping the cycle, because most people are completely self-absorbed and unable to think or care about anything outside what directly affects or inconveniences them.
"Yes, of course we need to do dramatically more about climate change, and to reduce greenhouse emissions, but they TURNED THOSE LANES I USE INTO BIKE LANES AND IT SLIGHTLY LESS CONVENIENT FOR ME AND I AM ANGRY!"

Fortunately, the cycle of growth that we're in predated Troy so hopefully his departure won't slow things too much.

Re: Politics
It's his departure in combination with the departures of everyone else who is pro-development that is the problem. The mayor has significantly consolidated power already, plans to continue doing so, and wants to make "reforms" that will lead to less development. Another problem is that the council is now openly acknowledging that they don't feel the need to live up to contracts made by previous councils.

Re: Politics
What "reforms" are you concerned about that will lead to less development? (Not an argumentative statement; I'm just a "policy-wonk" so I'm curious to hear your position.)normalthings wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2019 9:37 amIt's his departure in combination with the departures of everyone else who is pro-development that is the problem. I will add, I'm also concerned about the Council not feeling it needs to live up to its older contracts (even as bad as some of them may be...see P&L District agreement...) as this is what could really scare off development/investment in the city.

Kansas’ sagging economic metrics help drive population exodus
https://www.cjonline.com/news/20191106/ ... ion-exodusKansas employment, gross domestic product and average wage were among the standard metrics of economic vitality that suffered in the past decade to help reinforce the state’s population exodus to Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and California.
The Kansas City metropolitan area rightly claims expertise in creation of high-skill jobs, but the two-state region lacks middle-class job opportunities that draw more people to the American dream and sustain economic expansion. At the same time, Wichita’s strength is diversity of job prospects based on education and technical skills.
“Rest of the state?” said Marek Gootman, director of strategic partnerships at the nonprofit Brookings Institution based in Washington, D.C. “Brutal. More than twice as many people who are in that high-skill category than there are jobs to occupy them.”
